Elliot wakes up. The room was black and empty. The only light was the neon purple light coming from his clock.

4:22 am. That's what it said.

He was sick and tired of waking up so early, but he does every day. No matter what, its at the same exact time.

Elliot sat up, running his cold hands through his thick, black shaggy hair. He reached over to the bedside table and grabbed the piece of chalk that lay beside his black book. He turned to the wall next to him and marked another day off his chalk board calendar.

Two more days till spring and freedom. When a boy reaches the age of eighteen, he either decides to stay here on earth or leave the planet by joining the army. Elliot wasnt eighteen yet. He turned eighteen on the first day of spring, when the snow cleared and it was actually safe to leave the house.

He decided to join the army when he turned fifteen. On the last day of spring, he watched the young Men and Women in uniform hug their siblings goodbye, give their mother a good bye kiss and give their father a firm handshake before leaving on the military cruiser, The Earth Incredible.

After seeing them leave for the first time he wanted to be like them. He wanted to make his planet proud and fight the Artem Armada, an elite army of aliens plotting to destroy planets. Our military is out there making sure that our allied planets are safe from harm. It must take thirty-six years for that to happen, thats how long they were gone.

Elliot didnt understand why more people didnt join the military. It got everybody off this frozen rock. The freezing of the earth happen two-hundred and something years ago. He wasnt quite sure what happened. He never really paid attention when his mother taught that lesson to him and adopted sister. He usually sketched in his black book when they were supposed to be taking notes. All he really remembers was something about an Ice age, but thats probably wrong.

Elliot placed the chalk back onto the bedside table and picked up his black book. He got his black book two springs ago. He discovered that he wielded a talent for drawing and ran out of blank places in his textbook to draw, so he went out and purchased the black book.

Recommended for all beginning artists! He remembered the tag saying.

He flipped through the pages admiring the pictures of soldiers going off to battle, soldiers hugging their families goodbye and one of his sister drawn like a wildebeest.

He smiled and set the book down. He pulled his green blanket and rolled over on his cot, trying to fall back asleep. He was the only one stuck with a cot all year. He kept wondering why his adopted sister, Miranda, couldnt sleep on the cot. The excuse, Shes a lady. Ladies dont sleep on cots. Thanks Mom.

Eventually Elliot fell into a deep sleep. A sleep filled with dreams of war, friends and... a girl?
