Chapter 1
Chapter One
"Micah, get out of my room!" I screamed as my older brother raced from my room, into the depths of his own. There isn't enough money in the world to make me go in there. It smells like dirty, sweaty gyms socks left in a locker over a nine week vacation. Enjoyable I know. But since I am the middle child, I have to deal with it. My name is Breanna, everyone calls me Bree. I am fifteen years old, I have a twin, and whose name is Meghan. She is my height, but her hair is golden-brown mine is a lighter shade of golden. Her eyes often change colours; mine stay the same warm, chocolaty brown. But as much as we don't look alike, we have almost the exact same personality. She is wild, and mentally unstable, just like me. I also have an older sister, Jessye who is 16 years old who is a twin to 16 year old Peyton, an older brother Micah he is 18 years old, and smells like smoke and dirty socks. I have a 12 year old sister; Abby she has black hair, and bright green eyes. My younger triplet brothers, Nick, Adain, and Daniel, 9 year old monsters. But if I had to pick a favourite, it would have to be Adain, who is surprisingly quiet, given the state of his brothers, finally, there is Jayden, and he is my 3 year old brother. My mum is the one who takes care of all of us, since my dad walked out on us when Jayden was born. I don't remember him that well; all I know is that my sister Jessye hated him. Mum always said that we were better without him, and she was right. But she had a secret, and only Micah, Jessye, Peyton, Meghan and I knew about. We are all witches and wizards. Abby found out just last year. When we returned from Hogwarts, she had so many stories for mum. I had laughed along with her. I think that was the last time that we were actually a family. Since the beginning of the summer, no one has spoken to each other. There are always doors slamming, and people screaming. If using magic outside of the school wasn't illegal until the age of seventeen, the I think that Peyton would have killed me in my room long ago. I always tease her about not being seventeen, and she usually smacks me, followed by chasing and cussing. Usually, I race to my room, grab my broom and fly out of the window. Thankfully we live in the country, so no one will see kids riding around on broomsticks.
I slowly crept out of the spare bedroom, being hunted by Micah, who has a black permanent marker. Let's just say that my shirt is ruined, my head has a bloody cut, and I can't find my broom. I listened to the silence in the house, with ten kids things like that never happened. Even in the dead of the night. I heard a scream from downstairs, probably Abby's I think that Nick was taunting her again, and he is three years younger than her. Abby is just a big baby. I saw that my door was open, and that I had a clear break into my comfort zone. Like a ninja, I crept in the shadows towards my room. The sun was setting and left my room a bright golden colour. The windows had light streaming in, making patterns on the walls, floor, and ceiling. I could see some of those rainbows that happen when the light hits certain glass just right. I walked to the window, and flung it open letting in the warm summer breeze. I climbed out of the window and onto the shingled roof. I crawled slowly and carefully across the roof. Eventually I reached my favourite spot, right next to the giant willow tree. The sun was setting and made the sky turn bright orange. It looked like orange juice. I sighed, knowing that this is where I can go when I want to be alone, get away from the mayhem of my house, or just come up here and think. I love it, so quiet and calm, unlike the house below my feet. I carefully stood up, and braced myself for what came next the jump. I leapt from the house and towards the tree. As soon as my feet left the crinkly surface I knew that it was a mistake. There wasn't in enough momentum in my leap, and I almost missed the branch. Quickly, I pulled out my wand and screamed,
"ACIO BROOMSTICK!" I could see my broom sly out of the window of the kitchen and into my free hand. I quickly swung my legs over the broom and let my hand fall away from the branch that was supporting me from fifty feet above the ground. I soared into the sky, and saw a shadow move from behind the shed, and knew that I was done for. Micah was an amazing flier and not to mention that he was a beater on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. I flew around the side of the house and into the open window on the second floor. I jumped off the broom, and it landed with a soft thud against the carpet. I quickly swept it up under my arm and jumped on the thick wooden banister leading all the way down to the kitchen. I scurried off the banister and walked into the kitchen. Mum was in the kitchen making dinner. Chicken and turkey wraps. My favourite.
"Hi Mum." I called brightly, noticing that my hair was messed up. I quickly ran my fingers through it hoping to flatten my golden hair.
"Hey Bree, what have you been up to for... oh my gosh! What did you do to your head." she gasped, dropping the spatula that she was holding. I instantly put my hand to the right side of my head and felt something sticky. Blood.
"Oh, I kind of scraped my head against the Willow when I was flying." I lied easily. It wasn't a complete lie; I had actually been knocked to the ground by Micah and scraped my head against the corner of a wall somewhere. But I wasn't going to tell my mum that.
"That stupid willow tree. One of you kids is always getting hurt. I keep meaning to cut that thing down, before one of you gets the idea to do something stupid." she muttered turning back to dinner.
"Do me a favor, go clean that up please, I don't want you dripping blood all over the carpet." she said smiling. I nodded and headed up to the floor that housed mine, Meghan's, and Abby's rooms. Our house had four floors unless you count the attic. My room was on the third floor, quite aways up. So if you are every sleepwalking in this house, it's a long fall. I slipped up the stairs almost silently and into the bathroom.
"Merlin's Beard and Oh My Godric!" I gasped, my hair wasn't golden anymore it was a lovely crimson colour.
"I'm never gonna get all this dried blood out." I whined at the girl staring back at me in the mirror. There was a soft knock on the door.
"Bree are you in there? Mum says dinner is just about ready." called the voice that either belonged to Peyton or Jessye, I can never tell. Those two sound and look so much alike it isn't even funny.
"Yeah, I'm in here, but I don't think that I'm gonna be ready for dinner." I called back.
"Why." the voice of one of my sisters called again.
"Because my hair is fricken crimson coloured. I said growing frustrated. My sister didn't answer, but came barging in.
"Holy spiders you're right." she gasped, walking towards me.
"Is there anything you can do?" I begged. She looked concernedly at me, but nodded.
"Lay your head in the sink." Peyton commanded. I did as I was told. She turned the water on and let my hair soak it up. I could feel her fingers running through my hair getting chunks of blood out. Then she left for a moment, and returned with a bottle of strawberry scented soap. She poured a capful into her hands and then began working it into my hair. After a few moments she rinsed all of the soap out and grabbed a towel. I bent forward and twirled my hair into a crown inside of the towel. I stood upright and turned around to look at the sink. It was pretty horrific. There was dried blood sticking to the sides of the sink and on the drain.
"Ew." I said quite disgusted. Peyton nodded.
"Yeah and I had to wash it all out so mum wouldn't freak." she said just as disgusted. I laughed, and we walked out of the bathroom. I slid down the banister again with Peyton right behind me. She jumped off just as we cleared the first floor of rooms. She is a nut job... what can I say. Everyone else was in the dining room when we got there, Elena was grinning, and Jessye looked confused.
"Meghan what the Helena is wrong with your face?" Micah asked walking up from behind mum.
"Micah shut up." she hissed, I laughed as I sat in between her and Abby. Mum started serving up the Wraps and Micah started acting like a pig.
"Sometimes I worry about him." Meghan whispered I started giggling. Micah glared at us with beady black eyes.
"Oh kids, your Hogwarts letters came today." Mum called from the kitchen. Abby started bouncing in her chair.
"Yay, yay, yay! I love Hogwarts." she said excitedly. Mum came out of the kitchen holding a stack of parchment letters with green ink on them. She handed them out and then sat down rubbing her temples.
"Well just think mum, in a few days those five will be gone, and it will be peaceful again." Micah called point at Peyton, Jessye, Meghan, Abby and me. Jessye glared at him.
"Micah, knock it off. Jessye will you go get the aspirin out of your room." mum said with her eyes closed. Jessye nodded and vanished. She is really good at apperating, even though she isn't supposed to. She appeared at the foot of the stairs seconds later. Walking the aspirin to mum she stopped behind Jonah silently and whispered something under her breath. Because Micah now had horse ears, and a tail. Nick sprayed the milk that was in his mouth all over me because he was laughing so hard. Meghan actually fell out of her chair because she was laughing so hard. Mum even cracked a smile. Micah had that look, like worried, scared, and confused all at the same time. It was pretty hilarious, but when Peyton handed him a mirror, and he yelped.
"What did you do to me Jessye?"
"Oh, you just look, like a horse." she answered grinning and handing Mum the bottle of aspirin.
"Change me back, NOW!" he barked. Jessye muttered something, and the horse ears and tail vanished. Micah nodded. The rest of dinner was quiet as dinner with ten kids could get. After the dishes were done, courtesy of magic, my told us that we were going to Diagon Alley the next day. So we girls had to get ready for bed. Micah was going to stay with the triplets and Jayden. As we all headed up the stairs, Meghan whispered,
"Thank god that Micah isn't coming with us." I nodded.
"Night Meghan." I called heading into my dark room.
"Night Bree" she called back as the door closed. I walked to my bed and decided that sleeping in shorts was natural for summer. I heard something skitter across my room, it was a rat.
"MICAH! GET THIS RAT OUT OF MY ROOM!' I screamed. That stupid brother of mine is going to get it tomorrow.
