Chapter 1
New School, New Country. Can This Get Any Worse?
Dear Lexi,
If you're reading this, it means that i have died suddenly and your dad's taking you and your brother back to England (i know him too well). You will most likely be transferred to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the school where i met your father. Hogwarts is a bit different from the school you're going to now. Instead of a normal public school type system, you'll be living at Hogwarts. You'll be sorted into one of four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Both your father and I were Slytherins, so i expect that's what you'll be too. I'm sure you'll make a great Slytherin, sweetheart. Also, Hogwarts is a bit different from...well...the rest of the world. They don't have cell phones or iPods or anything like that, and they listen to either classical music or strange wizard bands that sing about Elfs and Hippogriffs and other things of that sort. They also don't wear the kind of clothes you normally wear, they wear robes. I know it'll be hard, but eventually you'll adjust. I love you, sweetheart, and i know you would have made me proud.
Love,
your mom, Aria Lynne Hale
I put my mom's letter into my suitcase.
"Alexandria! Damien! We're going to miss the plane, hurry up!" My dad called upstairs.
"Coming dad!" Damien said as he dashed downstairs. I picked up my suitcase and put my iPod and cell phone into my jeans pocket.
The flight to England was long and boring. The only thing to do was either watch the movie that they were showing on the plane (some messed up Angelina Jolie movie) or listen to my iPod. I decided to listen to my iPod, but even that got boring, even slightly annoying because I was listening to all of the music i'd have to forget about this year. Then my iPod died and i was forced to just go to sleep.
I woke up when my brother nudged my side.
"Lexi, wake up. We're in England. It's time to get off the plane."
"Huh?" i asked, still waking up.
"We have to get off the plane now." I got up and looked around. Damien and I were the only people still on the plane.
"Oh. Right." i got up, grabbed my bag, and followed Damien out of the plane. It was dark out, and it took me a few minutes to remember that London was five hours ahead of New York, so it was nighttime instead of the afternoon here.
"We'd better get going to your grandmother's house-we don't want her to worry, do we?" Dad said, walking towards us.
"Shouldn't we get a map? i mean, it's been thirteen years since we lived here." Damien asked. Dad chuckled.
"I lived here for twenty years. I think i can find my way around." I rolled my eyes. My dad was always like this-always thinking he knew everything, meanwhile actually knowing very little.
Grandma's house was only fifteen minutes away from the airport. Apparently, my dad really did know where we were going.
"You kids better get to bed, We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow!" Dad said once we were settled in Grandma's house.
"What do you mean?" Damien asked. My dad smiled.
"You'll see."
