Chapter 1
The Announcement
That atrocious afternoon, sixth period to be exact, I walked into the French classroom, for yet another day of learning to become bilingual. I love French class, but it has just one flaw: Simone L'roux. I have not a single idea why, but she lothes me. Every day, I have to survive the torcher she puts me through.
Today, particularly, she was making fun of my name, which she always does. "Faustine sounds like the name of a flower," She cackled to Jade, her imprudent friend. "And an unly one at that!"
"I don't know," Jade said bubbly. "I kind of like it. It sounds pretty."
"What the hell is wrong with you, you moron!" Simone said in a loud whisper. "You're supposed to agree with me to make her feel bad, got it?"
"Oh, right, okay," Jade replied still acting bubbly. "Faustine sounds like the name of a flower, and an ugly one at that!" Jade gave thumbs up to Simone. She just groaned.
"Will you just shut up?!" Raphael said. He was sitting next to me. Simone snarled at him.
"Thanks," I said.
All conversations pretty much ended once Madame Ju'bi walked into the room and announced, "Bojour, classe."
And as usual, everyone responded, "Bojour, Madame Ju'bi."
"All right," Madame Ju'bi proclaimed. "As you all know, there is an anaual class trip to Quebec, Canada for all of the french students. For the next few weeks, we will be preparing for the trip and discussing all of the minor and major details. In a moment, I will pass out all of the permission slips, which are to be signed and handed in by Tuesday. You also have to enclose a check of four hundred dollars for the cost of the trip. This trip is opptional; you are not required to go. We will discuss more of this on Monday."
About thirty minutes later, we where all leaving the class room chattering all about the trip, and what we knew about it. Raphael came up behind me. "Are you going on the trip?" He asked.
"I hope," I replied somberly. "I really want to go, but I have to earn a hundred more dollars before my mom will write a check. You know, the fifty-fifty deal. Are you going?"
"Um, I think so," he said. "But same as you, I have to earn quite a bit of money." I looked at my watch and relized I was running late.
"Oh my God! I'm so sorry, but I'm going to be late for history!" I said quickly. "See you later!" I yelled as I started to sprint down the hall. I couldn't tell if Raphael answered, but I almost wanted to hear a whisper goodbye in response.
