The Secret

I wear an elephant necklace everyday, I almost never take it off except to shower, or go swimming in summer or basically any time I really need to take it off. It use to be shiny silver but now it's tarnished and the chain is also tarnishing, but I wear it anyway. Whenever the thin necklace chain breaks I simply pocket the elephant trinket and replace the chain. And last year for Christmas my friend got me the exact same elephant necklace that I wore since the one I wore was old and tarnished. (Seriously, really tarnished. Like the elephant looked like it was painted black.)
So now the secret I'm sure all my friends who know me have always wondered since I started wearing the elephant necklace halfway through 8th grade (I'm a sophomore now so it's been two years.): it's just a necklace. There's no amazing back story to it. You want to know the story? Halfway through 8th grade my grandparents took my sisters and I to a museum and I saw the cute little elephant necklace and bought it. Then I decided I liked it a lot so I wore it every day. That's all to the story. There's no emotional attachment (like my great grandma gave it to me or anything) though I do freak out if I forget to put it on and I'm almost out the door to go to the bus stop (but then I simply run back to my room and put it on). I do play with the elephant ornament, I twirl it between my thumb and index finger when I'm bored or worried or deep in thought, it's a habit.
But the secret is that there is no secret, it's just my necklace, my favorite necklace. I like elephants and the necklace is cute so I wear it everyday. It's kind of my thing, my symbol of me, something that defines me from everyone else. And that's the secret.
