The World Under The Sea

She flicked her tail. A small fish rode on the ripple she created on the surface of the water. She watched as it was carried a few yards from her, and then swam away. She was a mermaid. Beautiful, with long blue-black hair, and a fair complexion. She was a powerful swimmer, and loved to explore the caves and ship ruins in her peoples' territory. She was a childhood friend of the Queen. She lived in the King and Queen's court as a lady-in-waiting. She was sixteen, and contrary to the customs of her people, she had no desire to marry. In a few years, she would be an old maid, and then she would never marry.
Her name was Kiri. She was a mermaid. Her tail was like an opal; white, with the faintest streaks of silver, pink, blue, green, and purple. Kiri was slender and tall, with a longer tail than most mermaids.
Kiri was on the reef that day, and while she was watching the fish play, she saw a mermaid dart through the seaweed beyond the reef. She swam after the mermaid calling,
"Wait, wait!"
The mermaid slowed and turned. She was pretty, with shoulder length blond hair and a pale pink and white swirled tale. She had beautiful hazel eyes and a heart-shaped face. She had a scavenger bag woven of yellow and red seaweed slung over her shoulder, and she had all sorts of shells, seaweeds, and crystal vials of sand, bits of coral, and small fish in it.
She started swimming toward Kiri, and when she came closer, she said,
"I have seen you with the Queen. You're a lady-in-waiting, aren't you?"
"Yes," said Kiri, "I serve the Queen."
"What are you doing all the way out here on the reef?" asked the other girl.
"I get away from the court when I can," Kiri said, "What's your name?"
"Excuse my impoliteness, lady," said the mermaid, "I am Nerin, daughter of Zale, and I - well, I do certain research for His Majesty, the King, actually."
"Well, Nerin, I hope I'll see you again soon!"
"Thank you, my lady," Nerin said.
"Please, call me Kiri."
"Thank you Kiri," said Nerin.
Kiri swam towards the shimmering palace, wondering why she had never seen Nerin in the court before.
'It doesn't matter. I'll see her soon enough. I do wonder what sort of research she does, though,' Kiri thought to herself.
She thought of asking Queen Serena, but thought better of it.
'Nerin would have told me if it's something I should know,' Kiri thought, 'I won't worry the Queen about it.'

Any and all suggestions in regard to the storyline/plot are appreciated and encouraged. I'm not really sure where I'm going with this, so . . . I have no plot :P
