She lay helplessly in the field, the long grass swaying in the wind. Dull sounds echoed in her ears, though for a moment, it did not seem to matter. All was peaceful. But something wasn’t right. There was smoke everywhere. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw fire blazing around, licking at the branches, like a lion stalking its prey. Pieces of metal and wood lay near her feet. It was that moment that she came to realize that she wasn’t moving because she didn’t want to, but because she couldn’t. She tried to speak, scream, yell, but only air thick with smoke came out. She did what most 18 year old girls did when faced with a crisis. She panicked. She tried to flail her arms but they were limp at her sides. ‘I’m dying,’ she thought. ‘I am going to die if I don’t do something. The fire is going to burn me alive. Maybe I should let it.’ So, that is exactly what she did. She waited for death to take her away with the wind, to bring her to something else, whether it was something good that awaited her or something bad. But it never came. She saw something in the distance. It came out as a blur though all of the smoke and fire, but still visible. It looked like… a person? But how could that be? Though, the thing got closer and she realized that it was a ball of fire. No, that wasn’t the right word. It was almost as if the fire joined to make one big wall, and it was coming straight at her. Then, just as she thought it was close enough to touch, it stopped. It was as if it was studying her with its deep, green eyes. Wait, eyes? ‘Fire doesn’t have eyes!’ she thought, extremely confused.
Whatever it was, it was getting closer. Heat radiated off of the thing, and she could almost feel the heat seeping into the pores of her skin. But then, as suddenly as it had appeared, it was gone. And it was replaced by a lady. She looked like a hunter by her clothing, and by the hunting gun beside her. She knelt down and tried to pull the girl out of the fire. And she did so until she was sure that they were out of harm’s way.
‘’Sweetheart, can you hear me? Look at me. Can you tell me your name?’’ the woman said, pulling the girl into her lap.
Of course she did, she was…. Her name was…
She licked her cracked lips and whispered, ‘’I don’t know. I don’t know who I am.’’
And then the darkness overcame everything else, and all there was left was black.
