Chapter 1

1

I stand in the middle of the store, everything moving around me, people
screaming, pages from books being torn from their spines and thrown about, my breath coming out in heavy pants that shake my shoulders. Someone touches, me their hand on my shoulder as I create a stronger wind, trying to throw them off me. Even though their touch is familiar, I want everything to stop. And it does. The wind stops, people don’t move, both hands on the clock refuses to tick. I can feel it in my mind, the energy it’s taking to freeze everything inside and outside of the store. Even though it’s weighing, I pull myself out from under Daniel’s grip. He’s still frozen, not even realizing that I’d moved. It’s my mind that does everything, including stopping his. I turn around to see him staring at me, his eyes wide as if he knew what I was going to do and wanted to stop me. He’s one of the only people that knew what I was capable of, and one of the only ones who encouraged it. But now, he doesn’t know anything I’m doing. Ducking under suspended books and papers, I make my way through the book store. Something set me off, made me feel the need to protect myself, and now I had the need to find it. Weaving my way through stuck, previously panicked people, I look out the large window onto the streets.
A man stands motionless—frozen by my mind—in a black suite and dark shades. A shiver races through my spine and I know he was what I was subconsciously trying to protect myself from. He would’ve been moving, would’ve been walking towards the store if I hadn’t stopped time. Going back through the book store, I set myself underneath Daniel’s hand. Everything begins to move again, wind whipping my long hair back into Daniel’s
face. He yells for me, trying to project his voice over the wind I’ve created. I stop,
everything falls to the ground, the wind not blowing anything through the air. The people stop screaming and Daniel walks around to face me head-on. “Are you okay?”
“We have to run,” I whisper. He doesn’t question me. He only gives a small
understanding nod. I take his hand and lead him through the store into the outside world. I can see the man in black walking quickly towards us, his gaze locked firmly on me, followed by another man dressed in the same kind of clothes.I look away down the other side of the street, looking for a way out. Daniel doesn’t understand. I search frantically and finally pull him down the street as the men begin to walk faster. “What’s going on?” Daniel asks, tripping over his own feet as I pull on him. “Why are they chasing us?” he asks as the men began to run.
“They’re chasing me. How many times do I have to tell you that?” I yell,
beginning to sprint while shoving my way past pedestrians and letting go of Daniel’s arm as he catches up to me on his own.
“Why are they chasing you?” he changes his question.
“They know,” I tell him plainly and keep running with him closely behind me. We
sprint down the sidewalk, shoving past anyone who gets in our way. All the while, I want to move them myself so I wouldn’t have to use to the energy to push them. To me, it would’ve been easier. Glancing back over my shoulder, I notice the men stopped running, walking quickly while whispering into a phone, his eyes still locked on me as I slow down and walk with Daniel next to me.
We walk casually down the street, letting people crowd around us again—
swallowing us and hiding us. Daniel keeps close to me, letting only one or two people get between us—if that. When he gets the chance to stay next to me, he takes it, pushing himself into me so we walk shoulder to shoulder. I glance up at him, half smiling at the way he’s so protective of me. “What are you doing?” I ask. He glances down at me then keeps watching the crowd we walk through,
“Making sure they can’t get to you so easily.” I chuckle under my breath. “Why would you say that they know?”
“Did you see them?” I’m completely serious. “They were coming right to the
building we were in then they start chasing us through crowded streets? That’s not some kind of mix up or mistaken identity.”
“Do you miss anyone?”
This question takes me off guard and I stop in my tracks, letting people shove
into me. Daniel stops a few steps ahead, not fully realizing the moment I quit moving. I stare at him, as if I’m asking him to repeat it even though that’s what I don’t want to happen. “Your parents or anyone—”
I cut him off by stepping forward and getting in his face. My hard gray-green eyes stare into his brown ones. “Don’t,” I whisper and walk forward. He’s quiet, following slightly behind me, knowing that I can punish him in any way I want if he makes a wrong move.
