Chapter 1
Chapter 2- What are friends for
Smiling she pats me on the back.
"See you're my hero." I know what she wants so I take out the credit card.
"Where are we headed?" I ask as she looks at me innocently and starts tugging on my arm.
"Only a few places." She states smiling. Five places and two hundred and fifty dollars later we're both sitting in our favorite cafe. Her with a mocha latte and me with a chocolate shake.
"You're lucky you can always drink those and gain nothing." Her eyes flash to the boys next to us. "Would like to have one of those to go, ooh maybe even two." I don't look over at them, just stare at my shake.
"Oh come on, you can't tell me those three over there aren't hot." She says bending in closer to me from across the table. She knows I don't like to talk about boys but always tries anyway.
"See you'll get one and I'll get two. Sounds fair to me." She starts drinking her latte again then almost spits it out. Taking a moment to swallow she quickly starts to pat my wrist.
"Don't look now but that boy over there was so checking you out! Ooh and he's a mega hottie!" I didn't even need to look and my face was already red. I had felt eyes on me but had passed it off as the normal one look and ignore.
"Ok Alex you can breathe now, he's back talking to his friends." I let out a breath I didn't know I had been holding.
Mandy's headed to the car as I pick up our trash. The tray is a little uneven because Mandy didn't finish her latte. I look over to where the trash is and notice I have to walk by the table where those guys still are. I can feel my face begin to turn red again but force myself to breathe. Jeez, what's wrong with me? I try to get my act together and act normal. I'm almost past their table when one gets up without looking and walks right into me. Cold latte going over both of us and the tray falling to the floor. It felt like the world was standing still. Then in the next moment I notice I'm on the floor repeating, "I'm sorry"; Over and over again while trying to pick up the mess.
The other two guys at the table are laughing. I'm trying not to look at any of them. My eyes seeming to be glued to the floor. It was because of this that I seen someone Else's hand reach out to stop my frantic arms. Noticing that the hand wasn't Mandy's I manage to force my own eyes up to look into a pair of smoky gray eyes I'd never seen before staring back at me.
"Whoa! Calm down. Let me help you." His hand moved from mine and carefully picked up what was left of the mess. My eyes were still stuck on his face. His brown hair constantly getting in the way of his eyes so that I couldn't really see them anymore.
"I'm the one who's sorry. This mess is entirely my fault. I'm such a klutz sometimes." He looked up at me then and noticed I was still staring at him like an idiot.
"Are you ok? Something wrong?" He asks looking worriedly at me. That snapped me out of it. I looked around me to see what was going on. The two guys at the table had stopped laughing and were now staring at us. Looking around I notice that some others have stopped what they were doing and are now looking at us too. My face had already been really red. I hadn't thought it could be more so until now. I tried to speak but nothing came out. Trying again all I got were stutters.
"I..I...I...I'm..S...S...So.." He puts his hand up to signal me to stop and I flinch back expecting to get slapped. Noticing a moment or so later that it hadn't happened. Opening my eyes I notice his hand hadn't even come toward me it was just calmly raised trying to get me to calm down. He had never intended to hit me no matter what my mind had tricked me to believe. I feel tears burning my eyes. Waiting, wanting to be shed. It's stupid. I have no reason for tears and yet they come. My mind is empty of all words except one. Run! Before he's able to say anything else I dash for the door. Leaving the tray and the stranger sitting on the floor.
Mandy's been in the car for a while now and it's obvious by the look on her face that she isn't happy about it. I dash into the passenger seat out of breath as she starts with her questions.
"What took you so long?" She asks immediately but then finally takes a good look at me. "What's wrong? What happened?" Before I get any words out though I notice the stranger from before run out the door and start looking all around. His eyes meet mine and they stay there as he makes his way towards the car. He;s already halfway across the parking lot before Mandy notices him.
"Ooh, handsome stranger two o clock." She's says smiling brightly. There's no chance of her driving away now, not with that big smile on her face. My eyes go directly to my lap as he reaches my window. Mandy being who she is quickly rolls down my window for him. I wish Mandy would do something for me just once. She can tell that I obviously don't want to be there and yet she sits and waits for him to catch his breath before trying to talk.
"Wait! Did I do something wrong? Was it something I said? I know I ran into but that was just an accident!" He finally manages to get out while I still feel his eyes solely on me.
