Chapter 1

Bloodhound

-----Sorin's point of view: --- My name is Sorin, and I'm a ferret. I live in a strange world, one with many secrets. I live with a human boy, my partner Aiken. Unlike the other humans, Aiken really cares for me, and I trust him with my life. I believe that, together, we'll put a stop to all of the evil in this world.
I was standing in the crowded marketplace. Somehow, I had gotten separated from Aiken. This was a nightmare! It was the middle of winter, cold snow rested on the ugly cobblestones of this city. People were everywhere, trading their little trinkets and dancing for the crowds. Ugh. People. I threaded my way beneath their feet. Nobody noticed me. Good. But of course, it wasn't to last. It never does. Two men, Russian I think, came running through the marketplace, scattering the crowds and yelling in a foreign language of which I have no knowledge. Of course they could only be looking for me. Quickly, I stood still, letting the snow blanket down upon me. It was a great camouflage. The men ran right past me. Hah, what idiots. Unconcerned, I shook the snow off my fur, and kept walking. Soon, I arrived at the meeting spot. It was a bare patch of earth, it stood out from all the cobblestones. It wouldn't do to linger here. I clenched my teeth and pawed at the ground impatiently. Where was Aiken?! I could only hope he was still safe...

----Aiken's Point of View:----
Pain. Blinding pain. "Ready to talk yet?" Sneered the man standing over me. I dared not respond, a scream was building in the pit of my stomach. I wouldn't give him that pleasure. I had to stay strong, if only for Sorin.

---Sorin's Point of View:--------
My concern for Aiken was increasing fast. He was never late, so maybe he ran into some trouble. Finally, I decided to just head out and look for him. Again, I darted in between the humans' legs, and searched the whole town from top to bottom. No Aiken. I retraced my steps to a board with human scribbles all over it. I stared at it, trying to read it like Aiken would, but I just couldn't decipher all the scribbles. I was going to have to find another way to find Aiken. I remembered him telling me one day that we were on the run from a group of people called, "Storm", and that they did bad things to other humans to get what they wanted. He had showed me pictures of all their agents, and I memorized every single one of their faces. If I wanted to, I could have identified them even after they'd altered their appearance with those weird needle things. Plastic something or another. I decided to see if I could get some help from some of my old friends. I headed towards the outskirts of town, threading my way through the thongs of people carefully.

----Aiken's Point of View: -----
A pair of hands pushed the blindfold away from my eyes. I glared, sure it was someone come to beat me, but to my surprise it was a girl about my age. She flinched, and I stopped glaring at her. "What do you want?" I asked gruffly. "I'm here to... well..... See, my father is the leader of this mafia gang, and he's always beating people up. I don't like seeing people get hurt, so I came to see if I could help you." She explained, gently dabbing away at my wounds with a washcloth. The freezing water came as a shock, and I jerked my head away.

---Sorin's Point of View:----

"Koda! I know you're in there! Come out!" I called, standing in front of an abandoned warehouse. "Koda!" I called again, staring into the looming darkness. A few seconds later, a skinny weasel ambled out of the warehouse. "You rang?" He asked, curling his tail. "I need your help." I said. Koda smiled, showing off his deadly fangs. "That's a first. What's the situation?" He asked. He may be rude and cold-hearted, but Koda could smell out a job-offer anywhere, especially one that involved finding people. He could track anything, even people running through water. Koda had a nose like a bloodhound. That was his nickname, bloodhound, at least among him and his little gang.
"Aiken is missing." Quickly, I filled Koda in on everything that I knew. He nodded once. I'll help you find him." He promised. I gave him a tight smile. "Everyone! We have a job!" Koda roared. More weasels than I could count appeared in the shadows, their eyes gleaming. "Bloodhound, bloodhound!" They chanted. Koda waited until they were sufficiently riled up, then addressed them again, "I want Torn, Ahanu, Fala, Luca, and Tarquin to come with us."The rest of the weasels cheered as the small little band assembled. Torn smiled at me, and then he turned away, as if eager to be off. Ahanu nodded once at me, obviously he was a man of silence. Fala was a girl, fiery and strong. Luca glared at me, his black eyes flashing, and Tarquin cheerfully hailed me with a slap of his tail. I suppose if Koda trusts them then I will too.
