Wind mouthed at the edges of the house, making the porch creak. It didn't matter though.I couldn't sleep anyway. With dad out on "business", there was no chance I would fall asleep until he walked through the door.
He'd been out almost every night this week. Not on his own, of course.Him and a group of other hunters had been clearing out an infestation of styevpya.A particularly vicious bunch, according to the dinner conversation.I twisted under the sheets, trying to get comfortable. What kind of father talked about supposedly mythical winged things over lasagne? Mine, apparently.
I turned over onto my front and watched the shadows slither across the carpet as the rain formed web-like patterns on the window. My hand hung over the edge of the bed, my fingertips resting against the carpet.Cold air swirled around my skin and made the hair stand up to attention. The age-old thought that something might be under the bed, licking its lips as it eyed my hand, made me nervous enough to yank my arm back. All kinds of bad stuff can lurk under you bed.Where do you think the fears came from?
The clock on my bedside table blinked in a constant rhythm. It was only source of light in the room, aside from the moonlight.Another 15 minutes passed as I waited. The only sound I could hear was the rustling of the trees and the hollow sound of wind in an empty space. As each second passed, anger built up in my chest, making my tongue a little numb.
It was ridiculously unfair that he was aloud to risk his life every night and I couldn't help.Even if I did know more, he wouldn't let me go with him. He'd just look at the picture of mom we always kept with us and turn his mouth down like he tasted something rotten.I didn't push it after he looked like that.At least, until I got so impatient that I started the whole argument again.
At last, around 4am, the familiar sound of a 1997 black Sonata all but rattled the windows to tell me he was back.I didn't climb out of bed, just to let him know I was pissed.Instead, I curled up tighter under the covers and hugged my legs, listening to the voices of him and a few of the other hunters celebrate their victory.
