Chapter 1
I woke up in the darkness. From the moonlight, I could see the outline of people running around outside. They were already training... I glanced at the watch I had recieved from my grandfather before he died. It was four in the morning. Knowing I'd never get back to sleep, I got up and rubbed my eyes.
It wasn't unusual for me to wake up early. I had chores to do before I went down to the kitchens and brought the men their breakfast in the morning. The men I talk of are the ones who are training outside. They are District 2's military. I looked over at a bed in the other comer of my small, square room. My brother, Johnny, was snoring quietly. He was fourteen years old and only had to enter his name once into the Hunger Games when it was around. I remember panicing... Hoping he wouldn't be picked. I felt dizzy.. But with great relief, he wasn't picked.
It was just before the rebellion had started. When a girl named Katniss Everdeen had led a rebellion against the Capitol. They had won, and all the districts rejoiced. Except for the people of district 12. It had been bombed by the Capitol and most were killed, some were taken to- what everybody believed to be extinct- district 13. I was sixteen, but that was two years ago. I was now 18 and gladly excepted that there would be no longer any hunger games, my name would of been entered so many times.
I walked out into our kitchen and began to clean around the place. Like I did every morning. When I had finished sweeping the floor the sun had now risen and I could here my mother stirring inside her bedroom. Minutes later she walked out to the kitchen, he brown wavy hair all over the place, her eyes were blood shot. Had she been crying again?
As you know about the defeat... You might also want to know why the Capitol was basically defeated. Or so.. Many believed it was them.
Children were brought to the square, they were blocked from anybody else- no one could get in or out. In moments, small packages parachuted down from the sky.. But instead of receiving anything, the packages blew up. Not just once, but when the doctors went in to see, more bombs went off killing everybody inside the fence.
My brother had died with the first bombs. His name was Ross and he was only nine years old. It showed how cruel people could be. President Snow was sentenced to exacution... It was to be done by Katniss Everdeen. But she never shot him. Instead Coin was shot. It was her plan to drop those bombs.. Not the Capitols. But district thirteens. Katniss's younger sister, Primrose had died with the second bombs.
She sniffled and sat herself down at the table. I sighed and began to cut her some bread. I buttered it and placed some cheese on it, as though forcefully, she began to pick at the bread. I sat down across from her and began to eat my own breakfast. Again, I looked at my watch and saw that it was now six. I would have to leave soon, my work shift starts at seven.
"Are you going Jay?" Ross asked walking into the kitchen, he looked so tired. He had brown hair like my mothers, green eyes like my dad. My dad also worked with the military, and like them had left in early morning to train.
"Yes, bye Ross... Bye mum," I said in a comforting tone to her. She looked up from her bread with a blank expression. She looked as though she had only realized where she actually was.
"oh, bye Jaylee," She mumbled. Jaylee Thorne was my name. I was named after the mockingjay.. Which, ironically was the symbol of the rebellion. I liked my name.. To me it meant something important.. The mockingjay was important.
I sighed and walked out into the early, cold spring morning. The kitchens were only a five minute walk from me, as we had a house at the military station. It was built here so that my father could get up here easier. All other military workers had bought homes around ours too. I guess it was just easier that way. When I reached the kitchens I waited for the cooks to finish the breakfasts so that I could serve it to the men.
The room outside where they ate their breakfast got packed quickly. After about another five minutes I began to serve them. They always had toast and cheese. Or maybe sometimes porridge. It would depend on what we had that day. But today, it was porridge.
"Morning Jaylee, how was your mother?" My father, Jake asked when I reached his table.
"Good, er, well, she was crying though," I told him. "I could tell, her eyes were all read as usual.." He took the bowl from my hands when my voice shook a little. I was scared for my mother, she was never like this. She was still going to work at the markets bit she seemed a little off touch.
"Don't worry, she'll be okay soon.." He promised. Like he always did. He says it everyday, but it's been two years. I don't think she was ever going to get better. The shock of losing her son was too much for to handle. I think this has broken her.
"Bye, I have to go," I said irritated. He sighed and said goodbye. I walked back to the kitchens and got more porridge.. I had to bring it to the last table. Which to my luck, is always Gale.
Gale was twenty one now. Only three years older than me, but he was always nice to me. He said I reminded him of his old friend back in district twelve. Katniss Everdeen. He said I was strong like her, and I cared for my family and friends too much Aswel.
"Morning Jay Jay," He said cheerily. When Gale had first arrived to the military, he kept away from everyone else. It was as though he didn't aknowlege anyone else's existence. That was until I sat down with him one day and wouldn't let him leave until he talked to me... He may also of said I was a little stubborn too.
"Morning Gale, how's it going?" I said sitting down across form him. He began to eat his porridge as though he had never been fed before.
"Alright," He muttered. "Trainings hard today.. We have to carry those nags around the whole area." I frowned. With my strength, I'm lucky to be able to carry the amount of bowls I do every morning. I let Gale finish his breakfast before we began to talk.
"So, you promised I was aloud to ask you anything I wanted to, today, remember?" I teased. He gave a small laugh and nodded. Me and gale had this thing, where, every week- we had a day each of asking questions. Today was Friday- or, my day.
"What do you want to ask? You've asked nearly every question there is," he told me. I laughed and began to think hard of questions.
"You said that yourself and Katniss were close," I said to him. He nodded slowly, as though anxious to here my question. "Well, did you ever kiss her?" I asked him. He gave a small smile.
"Yes. We did kiss.. But I don't think it meant anything to her, she was always in love with Peeta," He said with some pained voice. I sighed, I hated him being sad.
"Sorry-" but I was cut off when in the blink of an eye, the tv's had turned on. Every single tv was on. I looked up and saw a man with curly red hair sitting down on the tv. He began to speak in a slow urgent voice.
"It has just been announced that, there will be the seventy sixth hunger games. All children between the ages of twelve and eighteen must register. This applies to all districts. As it always was, twelve year olds must enter their names once, thirteen year olds twice, going in that same pattern until eighteen year olds enter seven times. Of coarse, if you want to, you can place your name in as many times as you want," He said with a cold laugh. I was heaving, the room had gotten suddenly blurry. I felt gale grab me, I had fallen off my chair. I felt the years form in my eyes. I couldn't do this. I know it was seven out of a thousand chance that I might get picked. But so what? There was still a chance that I- or even Johnny, would be picked.
But what choice did I have? As though the news reader had read my mind.
"Any child found not to have registered will be imprisoned, have a nice day," He said. I gasped for air. There was no hope.
The hunger games had begun again.
Soo, what do ye think? It's my first hunger games fanfic, I hope you like it!:) COMMENT : FIVE!:)
