Chapter 1

And so it began...

Luna sat alone in her compartment on the Hogwarts Express, watching absentmindedly as the vivid green trees and hills flashed by. She wondered what it would be like if the train could simply fly through the air rather than ramble away on the tracks.
With a faint click, her compartment door slid open. Luna turned to see a round-faced boy standing there, looking fearful and nervous.
"C-can I sit here, Luna? All the other compartments are really full. I couldn't find any other compartments but this one and one with the Slytherins," he said, shivering slightly at the very thought of having to sit with the Slytherins.
Luna nodded, and he sat uneasily in the seat opposite to her. Luna had always noticed how he always seemed nervous around her, even though she had befriended him the previous year by giving him a hand-made cork charm to keep the Nargles away from him in Potions class.
"Did you, er, have a good summer, Luna?" he asked in a desperate attempt to make conversation.
"Oh, yes, it was very enjoyable, actually," said Luna nodding. "Daddy and I planted a new vegetable (at least, we think it's a vegetable) by our house. They help prevent hair loss, you know." said Luna, thinking happily of all those people who would still have hair when they were ninety. "Did you have a good summer?"
"Yes. Gran bought me a new book for studying Herbology. She says it's time I was good at something...." his voice trailed off.
Luna looked out the window again. "I am excited for sixth year. I hope we can have Dumbledore's Army lessons again. They were fun." she said. It was like having friends, she thought to herself.
Neville nodded. "I do too." Luna saw he hesitated as though he wanted to say something more before he said. "It made me feel braver. Like a real Gryffindor," he said quietly.
"But you are a real Gryffindor. The Sorting Hat put you there." Luna stated, raising her eyebrows.
"Maybe is made a mistake!" Neville stressed. "I don't have an ounce of courage, and that's what Gryffindors are known for!"
But Luna shook her head, smiling slightly. She considered for a moment, then said "Courage doesn't always roar. It's not always visible. Sometimes, courage is the kindness of heart and the determination to try again when you fail."
Neville blinked at her. "I'm glad you're my friend Luna."
Luna looked back out the window. "I'm glad I'm your friend too." she replied with a small smile.
