Will Carris: How Did I...

by: Luvli_Grl
Sometimes I wonder if people actually want to know me. If they truly care about me. If they just want to use me. Or if they don't want me at all.

Walking down the street, I enter my house. It's midnight and the house is quiet. I try to sneak up stairs when my mom starts screaming. I rush to her room and burst through the door. Dad had a broken beer bottle in his hand and marijuana laid out on the bed. He holds the beer bottle and throws it down. I run and jump in front of my mother. The bottle hits me on the head and the glass shards enter my brain. I pass out on the ground and my mother calls my names. Everything is too loud and my head hurts like crazy.
The paramedics arrive and take my mom and I to the hospital. My dad was taken to jail for attempted murder, child abuse, and possession of illegal drugs. My mom and I have been at the hospital for days, maybe even weeks, I don't know. Mom recovers quickly, but I'm not so lucky. Everyday, I go in and out of comas. I've been to the O.R. I don't know how many times. The surgeons can't get the glass out of my brain. I don't eat or drink much anymore, needles are stuck in me everyday, and no matter what my overall health never gets better.
One day, my heart just stopped beating. The doctors try to revive me. They say that the glass had continued to go into my brain and it hit my nervous system. The blood overflowed and starts clogging up my heart. My heart just couldn't take it. The reviving, CPR... it just wasn't working.
"Will! Will!" my mom screams. She furiously tries to push the doctor away. I look at her and smile. She stops and stares at me. Tears rained down her face. My eyes start to close.
"Will!" my mom yells. Goodbye, world.
My name is Wilma "Will" Carris. I am 13 years old. I have dark red hair and hazel eyes. I was pronounced dead at 2:36 in the morning.

"Ugh," I groan as I wake up. Where am I? When did I get here? I thought I was dead. I sit up, but something feels heavy on my back. I turn around to see dark red wings. I try to pull them off, but it hurts. That's when I notice that the wings are attached to my back. What is this place?
"Seems like you're up," a girl says. I look to my right. Sure enough, a girl was there smiling at me. She had honey blond hair and ocean blue eyes.
"Where am I?" I ask.
"The In-Betweens. You're here because you have not decided if you're ready to move on or not," the girl says.
"Are you serious?!" I exclaim. THis can't be happening to me.
"No, just kidding. You're in Clauda, the world of the Spiritcatchers. Select kids who die are sent here to become Spiritcatchers. Our main purpose is to capture loose souls that linger around here and take them back to their owners on Earth," she explains. I'm puzzled. What the hell is going on here?
"So I'm a..." I determine.
"Spiritcatcher? Yes!" she says.
"One question," I say.
"What is it?" she has a slight grin.
"Actually two. Who are you and why are there wings on my back?" I'm confused.
"My name? Karma! The wings? You're in Spiritcatcher form. You gotta get out of it," She replies.
"And how do I do that, lonney-toon," I mutter. She smiles.
"Spirit!" Karma says. I'm guessing she didn't hear me say "looney-toon".
"Spirit?" I say uncertainly. Sure enough, my wings disappear. What was this place, the crazy house?
"If you want to get your wings back, say Soul," Karma tells me.
"Soul," I say. Both of our wings come back. I saw that she had light purple wings. They were pretty, unlike mine. Mine looked like they were painted with blood.
"Spirit," we both say.
"Well then, new recruit! Let's go!" Karma takes my hand and pulls me towards a little town.
"I didn't agree to this yet!" I mutter as we run.
