What seems like the perfect crime worries the police department. But once Trevor Hill is involved the plot comes to an end.

Chapter 1

Mr. Jared Raven and the Crime Scene

I hopped out of the police cruiser and stepped inside the Scriptorium. Books that had lined the walls were now scattered and parchment was spread everywhere. I walked forward a few more steps to my partner Henry Clise.

"Mornin' detective." said Henry. He put on his usual face that means a crime has been committed.

"Where is the crime scene?" I asked. Henry led me down a walkway and into an office. There I saw the crippled old body of a librarian. I noticed the small round bullet hole that exposed her head and had taken her life.

"Evidence of who did it?" I asked looking at Henry.

He motioned toward a cigarette bowl with a burned cigar in it. "Only evidence there is. We know who it is but there is not enough evidence to convict the suspect of murder."

I gave Henry the look like 'Are you serious?'.

"The suspect is Arnold Desperoux. Long time suspect of theivery but there is no murder on his rap sheet." reported Henry. "He always has a clean get away. As I said before, not enough evidence to convict him."

"Who is the victum?" I said.

"Marylin Case. Age fifty eight. Long time worker at Lincoln Historical Scriptorium. Died late last night working overshift when someone heard a gunshot." reported Henry, almost smiling at his accomplishment in research.

"Who's the 'someone', Clise?" I said finally interested.

"Jared Raven. He was working graveyard shift for a sick workmate. He said he heard the gunshot around 11:30 PM. Rushed right to the nearest phone and called 911. He is standing over there." finished Henry, pointing to a man in the far corner. He had brunet hair and a brunet mustache. His leather jacket almost concealed him from view.

I walked over to Jared. "Jared," I began, "I am just going to ask you a few questions."

He grunted, which I took as a 'Sure'.

"Where exactly were you when the gunshot sounded."

I saw the hesitation in his eyes. "I was working a late shift for someone who was sick at work today. I was workin' down at the twenty-four-seven supermarket, ya know."

'Liar.' I thought. "What did you do when you heard the shot? Was anyone else with you?"

"I ran to the nearest phone booth. I had just gone out to take out the trash, that's why I couldn't make it back to the store. I panicked. There was one person with me. I don't really remember. He spent spent the whole time restocking shelves." he replied, kind of in a hurry.

"I see." I mocked. A hint of anger flared in his eyes.

"Do you think that I am lying, sir?" said Jared, forcefully.

"Oh no. I just think that you are not telling me the whole story. Who was the other man with you?" Jared stopped to think.

"Well, now that you mention it, I think it was a woman. Yeah, it was. Black hair, slim but tall. Her name was something like Morgan or Marcie. That's all I remember about her. Kept to herself she did."

"Well, thank you for all your help Mr. Raven. We will be seeing each other again." I nodded and headed back to my cruiser.

I took out my notebook and turned to the page marked 'Possible Suspects'. "Two more names for the list." I said to myself. I took a pen and wrote down the names, Jared Raven and Marcie Denson.
