She
Chapter 1
She shivered as she walked out into the pounding rain. It had been beating down for hours now, and the streets were nearly flooded with water. The clouds, a swirling mass of darkness, seemed as though they had been put in place for her, as if to stop the stars from witnessing what she was about to do. The walk was not long, but tedious all the same. Those few moments were, perhaps, the longest of her life. Time did not seem to flow in a straight line, and no matter how hard she tried, her destination never seemed to grow any nearer. She did not bother to cover herself from the rain. It would not matter soon, anyway. Perhaps it had never mattered. It was not long before the doubt came, the fear that she had so carefully locked away inside of her. She nearly turned around the. Turned and ran, home to safety, and warmth, and- and what? Nothing. There was nothing left for her there. She drew in a long breath, her chest shuddering with fear. Be brave, she told herself. She would not go back on this decision, not now.
It came all too soon. She stopped suddenly, realising that she had finally reached the place that she had set out for. Her breath caught in her throat, her heart skipped a beat.
No.
No.
She would not. She could not. Her heart raced, the speed of its uneven rhythm matched only by the drumming of the rain. Yes, she must. It was all she had left now. Her trembling fingers groped inside of her sodden jacket pocket, eventually withdrawing a pocketknife. Her fingers were numb with cold, but she ignored that small fact. It would soon be over. Everything, would soon be over. She closed her eyes. Raising the knife; raising her wrist.
The sight went unnoticed to most, but those who looked saw that the water seemed to have the faintest red gleam that night, almost as if the blood of a dying woman ran through it.
