Chapter 1

The Story of the Gods

Once, long ago, the world was a dark and lonely place, with few people on it. There was one village, which was the home of a race of gentle humans intent on protecting the only world they knew. They were the single race on this planet, gifted with unique abilities that helped to preserve their way of life. But although they possessed impressive power, they could not hold onto it for long, and all that they had vanished into the deep void of space. They waited many years for the gods to grant them help, to bestow upon them the gifts they needed to save their darkening world.
Somewhere where only the gods can go, they heard the pleas of this small village, and decided to grant them their wish. They would receive three gods to lead them in the world, to protect them and guard them. And thus, three siblings were born to the village's leader. The village was overjoyed, and treated the three siblings as roalty as their godly abilities blossomed.
The first and oldest by two years was a strong male. His domain resided over those who passed from life and the underworld, where they resided after their passing. He was just and fair, passing judgment in a way no one would argue with. His name was Adrian.
The second sibling was gentle and kind. Her beauty sparked the emotions of others and they praised her highly. Her domain was based on emotions, of love and sadness and happiness. She brought them all together and carried them catiously. Her name was Ai, which came to mean Love after many years.
The youngest sibling was intelligent. Her curiosity and observant eyes gathered every detail the world had to offer, and she would remember every scrap of information as long as she lived. Her domain resided over the curiosity that drove man and the intelligence that helped him understand what he saw. Her name was Mika, after the wise raccoon.
The three siblings lived gentle lives, and were treated with great respect. Because they lived, the village people could as well. The world became brighter as each child began to develop their powers and learn more about the world. But something was missing. Although the three children were indeed powerful and were keeping the world alive a lush, they lacked one thing. The three children did not love anyone. They believed that as long as something pertained to themselves, they could care for it. As soon as it became worthless, they would cast it aside. They had no love for the people they watched over, and therefore could not understand them.
The solution to this problem came many years after Mika's birth, precisely twelve years, in fact. On the eve of Mika's twelfth birthday, the three siblings were gifted with a fourth. A younger sister. But because of the strain their mother was put through, she quickly died, leaving her husband, her newborn, and her three children alone.
The new baby girl was very human, compared to her older siblings. She laughed, she cried, she reacted as a normal baby would. Her emotions were not effected by whatever abilities the gods had granted her.
The three godly siblings quickly grew close to their youngest sister. She stirred inside them something they could not understand. Without ever realizing it, the three older siblings began to love their youngest sister.
She grew quickly, just as the others had done. She went nameless for many years as the siblings tried to find her perfect name. They believed it sound be something that fit her abilities.
Her abilities never surfaced.
Her siblings were deeply confused. Why was this girl, who was their pure-blood sister, not like them? How had they been so wrong in thinking her to be one of them?
As years passed, her siblings watched her closely. Not only was she powerless, but she seemed to have issues with her mental awareness. When she became a teenager, she was still stuck with the mind of a child. She did not understand many things, such as love, science and death, all of which her siblings tried in vain to teach her about.
Her siblings began to feel very worried. How would such a girl live in their dark world? She needed constant supervision, which the three young godlings could not provide, as they had an entire world to protect. Eventually, they gave up, and let her wander on her own.
Some years after this revelation, another problem persisted. Their sister was doing something that they could no longer do. She was aging. When the three older siblings had reached their twenties, they had secede to age. But she was reaching the middle of her life already. This was proof that she was nothing like her three siblings. Yet they still loved her as they always had, and cared for her as her life slowly drew closer to the end.
On her final night, her three siblings gathered around her bed. Ai and Mika held each other tightly, and Adrian sat in silent vigil. As her last breath came and went, her three siblings prayed to the gods one last time for a miracle.
The gods answer all prayers from the heart.
