The sunlight streaking through the blinds greets me as I wake up. I'm now 11! I think to myself. That makes me leap out of bed and put on:
"Happy Birthday, Dia!" My family greets as I enter the kitchen. Well, more like my foster family. You see, I was adopted when I was about a year old and lived with the Hewitts ever since.
I hug each of member of the family, mom, dad, my older sister Gillie and my little brother Alex. We all have my favorite breakfast: chocolate chip waffles.
Dad goes (in his navy blue bathrobe) out to get the morning newspaper. He brings back with him the mail, too. Addressed to me is an elegant envelope with a seal with an "H" on it.
"Umm... I don't think birthday cards look like this." I begin, as I inspect the letter.
Mom leans over and checks it out. "Honey, I don't think this is a birthday card." She and Dad exchange nervous glances.
I rip open the envelope and take out the letter. It's an ivory color and it gives off an antique feeling. I read,
"HOGWARTS SCHOOL of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY
Headmaster: ALBUS DUMBLEDORE
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)
Dear Claudia Hewitt,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.
"I knew this day would come...." muttered Dad.
"Your-you're a WITCH?" Gillie and Alex blurt at the same time?
Suddenly, the door opens. A woman in an emerald witch hat and robe enters. "Of course. The difference between a muggle and wizard is like night and day."
Every member of my family stares at her.
"I forgot to introduce myself," The emerald-robed woman says. "My name is Minerva McGonagall, and I am a professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Now where is your fireplace?"
"Fireplace?" I ask. "But why?"
"Well, the easiest way to get anywhere is to floo there. Show me to your fireplace." McGonagall replies. Dad leads us into the living room.
McGonagall throws some green powder into the fireplace, and a green light surges through it.
"What are you waiting for? Go in!" McGonogall presses me.
"Umm... ok." I step into the fireplace and the green light pulls me in.
McGonogall appears next to me in a flurry of green light. "Welcome to Diagon Alley."
I open my eyes and find myself on a little cobblestone street lined with shops. I smile in awe.
"Now, don't dawdle, Claudia. We must get along." McGonogall snaps. I follow her along the narrow sidewalk.
"Um, excuse me Professor?" I ask her as we are walking.
"Yes, Claudia?" McGonogall replies, not looking at me.
"What do we do now?"
"Well, Claudia, we stop at the first place on your list. Madam Malkins." McGonogall answers me, as if I'm stupid.
I obviously don't know what Madam Malkins is, so I pull out my supply list. Madam Malkins Robes for All Occasions. I read.
Just then, McGonogall turns, and I follow her. The bell dings as we enter Madam Malkins.
McGonogall goes to have a chat with a lady who I guess is Madam Malkin. I go and sit down on a bench within the store. Then the ding of a bell rings through my ears. I look up to see who is at the door.
A boy with light blonde hair and ice blue eyes, with his father who looks just like him enter the store. They sit down at a bench across from me.
The father takes a look at me. He blinks, as if I'm not a real person, then shakes his head. He glares at me, then stands up.
"We're leaving. We'll come back again another time." The father says icily as I snatch another cold glance from him.
The blonde boy stands up and walks toward the door, but he looks over his shoulder at me. Our same color eyes lock for a second. But then he turns back and walks through the door. I feel an emptiness inside of me.
McGonogall gestures for me to come over. "Claudia, we must get along now. You have to get a wand!!"
She and I exit Madam Malkins, and walk over to Ollivander's Wand Shop.
And then, I realize, that this was the day that changed everything.
