Chapter 1
Mati Jones
Why do they keep these hovercrafts so cold?
"Drop down in five minutes."
Standing by the door, I look out into the warm morning of District 2, sighing as I saw the people bustling about. "Do I really have-"
"Yes, you do Matilyn." Dad interrupts, giving a pointed look at Mom, who was on the verge of sobbing. A Peacekeeper comes forward, shocking me into sleep. I fall backwards onto the cold metal, whispers that I was too young coming from my mom. Mom never agreed with the idea, but Dad argued I was a creation, no more, no less. I was serving the Capitol this way, I had been trained, and I was sure as hell ready.
-
"MATI! WAKE UP!" My best friend, Devan shouts at me. "Morning sunshine." I mumble, sliding out of my silk sheets. Devan tosses a dress at me, already sporting one herself. "Ooh, pretty. Birthday gift from Karlee?"
Karlee was Devan's older sister, who had been moved to the Capitol to help work on a project.
Karlee had always been the smart one.
Unfortunately, Devan had not been blessed with said smarts, but instead got beauty.
Now, what does that tell you?
I grin at the girl standing in the mirror, wearing the strapless lemon dress. "QUIT MAKING GOO GOO EYES AT YOURSELF! WE'RE GONNA BE LATE!" Devan shouts impatiently from downstairs.
-------
We do make it in record time.
Which turns out to be in the middle of the reading of the treaty. We sneak inside, parting ways as Devan hurries to the seventeen year old section.
Meanwhile, I'm stuck here in the dumb fourteen year old one.
At least fifteen minutes go by.
Another ten.
Is the treaty reading over?
Apparently so, because Lillac (our escort) steps up, sporting a metal dress this year.
No literally, it is made of nothing but metal scraps and parts. There is literally no sound but her heels click-clacking across the stage, over to the girls bowl.
"Matilyn Jones!" She announces, and already I hear a shout of a voulunteer, coming from my section. Suddenly, we're racing towards the stage, when I trip her, and brush myself off, smirking as I daintily head up the stairs.
"Well, that was.....interesting." Lillac gives a wary smile to me before she sashays over to the boy's bowl, waiting for a second, most likely to be more dramatic.
"Dillon McConville!" She announces, as a boy with shaggy, blonde hair shuffles up to the stage, his blue eyes shining with excitement. He too, shoots down volunteers, turning to me. "Happy Hunger Games." Dillon whispers as we shake hands, grinning ear to ear.
Instead of worrying me, this sets off a little tingle in my belly.
As soon as we're finished shaking hands, both of us are whisked off the stage, and into the Goodbye room, where I sit on the floor and grin, barely able to contain my excitement.
May the odds be ever in your favour, Dillon McConville.
Howdy y'all!
Note, I do not plan for Mati to win, and you allz will see why in later chapters. And yeah, this first chapter is short. I honestly don't care.
Annemarie, I do believe it is your turn!
May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favour,
Marti
P.S. I will like, love anybody who knows the title reference! Okay, now may the odds be ever in your favour! Peace off!
