All you need is love
Charlie's P.O.V.
I looked at Blondie and her friend walking into the store, trying my hardest for them to not see me. My boss, an old jolly man named Jake, had told me that all I had to do was sell the music, I could do that perfectly fine behind the counter. "It's good you could step in to work today Charlie," Jake said again. I nodded and gave a customer his change back. I had told him that I was glad to do it, and it wasn't a lie. When Jake walked away I noticed the Elvis-haired boy Blondie came in with putting something in his pants. When I saw Blondie's eyes spread wide I knew something was going on. "Hey you!" I called. The boy looked at me and started to run. "Oh fock," I cursed and immediately chased after him. When he turned around the corner I sprinted a little faster, hoping that he has been stopped by any of the workers. I smiled when I saw my intuition was right; Thick Rick was holding the boy by his collar. "Why you're running then boy?" he questioned the thief.
"Running from me Rick," I told him. Thick Rick looked at me with a bewildered look in his eyes and I just shrugged. "Why would any boy run from you Charlie?"
"I'm quite dangerous."
"Want any help with bringing this one back?"
I nodded as Rick led the boy to the store. The thief kept trying to get out of Rick's fat fingers, but he never succeeded. Once we were back in the store, Rick released the boy. Blondie looked at us both in fear, but Rick looked at her with his innocent smile. He was always feared, but he was one of the sweetest people I knew. His large body made him perfect for the work around the harbor or the shopping centers. He also was not the brightest, hence his nickname. "What is wrong with you?" the boy asked.
"You tried to steal some records that's what's wrong!"
"Prove it love," the boy smiled, bending over me.
"You have them with you right now!" I yelled. The smile on the boy's face, I assumed his name was John since Blondie mimicked that name to him, got bigger. "Well get them then."
I was a bit startled by that remark, and looked at the records in his pants. I sighed and put my hand towards the records, hearing a gasp from Blondie. "Easy there hot stuff," John smiled. I took the records and looked at Jake, who mysteriously appeared behind me. "You two are in trouble," he stated.
"Hey, it was just me old man, leave her out of it," John protested, pointing at Blondie. I frowned and then nodded slowly, noticing some relieve in John's face. "Aren't you Mimi's cousin?" Jake questioned, John nodded.
"She'll hear of it and you'll get a fine."
"But I returned them."
"You could also work here until your fine is paid."
I looked at Jake in shock, but luckily John did the same. "Fine, I'll pay," John sighed. I smiled in victory when John and Blondie exited the store, but then looked at my hand. I had to wash this as soon as possible.
The next day I walked home from school by myself, when I noticed a boy leaning against the gate of Julia's house. When I looked a little closer I recognized him as the record thief. I tried to walk past him without being seen, but it was all in vain. "What are you doing here?" he called. I stopped and looked at him in disgust. "Aren't you supposed to be at school?" I hissed.
"Aren't you?"
"Last period off."
"Whatever," John sighed as he got back to his banjo playing. I scoffed at his attempts, as I tried to walk on. "Can you do any better them?"
I looked at John, but did not reply. "Well show me then!" John said and handed me the banjo. I sighed and placed one foot on the gate to support the banjo. Then I started playing a random song that popped in my head, it sounded a little like Johnny Cash. From the corner of my eye I saw John's mouth drop, but he quickly recovered. "I already thought I heard you Charlie," a voice said. I looked up and smiled at Julia. "Is Lucy at yours?" I questioned as I handed the banjo back to John. My question was answered by a little girl running out of the house and hugging my legs. "Can I count you two in for dinner?"
I shook my head and told Julia that we'd better go. I notices some relieve in John's eyes, but ignored it as I held Lucy's hand whilst walking home. When we were around the corner I flicked a cigarette. "You smell now."
"Thanks Luce, I always know I can count on you," I sighed.
"Christopher won't like it."
I felt a shudder crossing my back. "You should call him dad you know," I hissed.
"You don't."
I smiled and messed around with her brown curls. "He's not my father silly."
"Right," Lucy said, pushing her eyebrows together.
"Don't think so much doll, it'll ruin your pretty little head," I said as I breathed out some smoke. Lucy smiled and carefully hit me. She was only six years old, but I knew she was brighter than most people I knew. I just wished she stopped thinking so much about what was going on, and just let it all be. When we arrived at our house I threw my finished cigarette on the ground and took a deep breath of fresh air. I unlocked the door, only to be attacked by our beagle, Muffin. She immediately forced Lucy to pet her as she laid down on her back. "We're home," I sighed, stepping over our dog.
"So soon?" my mother questioned. I walked into the small kitchen to watch her wash the plates. "Last period off," I said as I sat down at the dinner table.
"Lucky you," my mom stated. I frowned as I tried to look at her face, which she had kept hidden from me ever since I walked in. "What's wrong?" I questioned, slowly standing up.
"Nothing dear."
My mother flicked whilst saying that, and I finally saw the blue spot near her neck. "Bloody hell," I hissed as I rushed over to look at it. I was about the same length as my mother and I could look in her eyes, which were full of tears. "Mommy? What's wrong?" Lucy's voice came from across the room.
"Nothing dear."
"Then what's that?"
"Mommy bumped into the doorway today, not really smart," my mother said. I looked at Lucy, into her curious green eyes. "Fancy helping us?" I said, plastering a smile on my face. Lucy nodded happily and went to stand next to me. I gave my mother one last glance, which she wisely avoided, before I started drying the plates.
After finishing my shift at the cafe the next day, Paul picked me up as usually. When we were around the corner I saw Ivan and George leaning against some building. "Guys!" I happily exclaimed. George looked at me with a cigarette in his mouth and a crooked smile upon his face. "Badass," I smiled as I took the cigarette from his mouth and placed it in my own.
"Is it alright if they join us?" Paul questioned.
"Sure, it's not like we had any plans right?"
George and Ivan burst out in laughing whilst Paul turned red, I loved these moments. "Well come on then, don't want to be babysitting you guys out on the street!"
"Babysitting?" Ivan scoffed.
"You all are young me, just remember that," I smiled as I handed George his cigarette back and proceeded walking to Paul's house.
I loved getting out of the house and hanging around with the boys. We were sitting in Paul's room, George was playing Paul's guitar and I had brought mine along. We were mostly just goofing around and playing random tunes whilst singing random words. "We are most definitely the next Elvis," George smiled. I let out a small laugh. "No George, nobody can be the new Elvis," I stated. The boys laughed and George lay down his guitar. "Speaking of Elvis, Ivan here told me you fall for boys like the King."
I smiled at George and winked, which caused Paul and Ivan to let out an 'ooh'. "What are you implying Georgie?" I smiled. George laughed and looked at the guitar. Leaning over on the bed, I placed my hand underneath his chin. I carefully places my lips on his and them moved back to my seat, leaving George with a startled look upon his face. "If that is seriously all to get a kiss I would've done it far earlier!" Paul said between the grasping for air. My head shot up and now it was completely silent in the room. "Who do you fancy then Paulie?" I asked, sitting back in the chair.
"Nobody," Paul quickly said as he looked at his guitar.
"You boys are all the same," I smiled, glancing at my house. I let out an annoyed sigh when I noticed the lights going on. I grabbed my guitar and gave my friends one last wink before heading out of the window. When I was in my room, Paul hung out of his window and signed for me to come back. I did as he asked and smiled at his uncomfortable sigh. "Don't hate me," he begged.
"I could never hate you."
"It's Michelle," he mumbled. I smiled and put my ear closer to him. "Who?"
"Michelle," Paul hissed. I laughed and patted his head. "I know," I smiled.
"What? How?"
"Ask your buddies," I winked. Paul's head shot back to the two boys who were looking at the floor out of shame. "Don't kill them my love," I smiled as I placed a kiss on his cheek.
