Partners in Crime ~ A Joey Richter Love Story

When Lucie Woodill is transferred to England, she leaves behind her life and her beloved best friend, Joey.
She meets another girl, Dodie, who seems to reflect Joey's personality. She later discovers that Dodie is obsessed with something called Starkid, and immediately recognises a certain member. She is able to keep her past under wraps until she accompanies Dodie to Germany to meet the group. Suddenly her past, and more importantly, her feelings towards her best friend come flooding back.

Chapter 1

Distracted during Algebra - Introduction

"Why am I in the same maths class as you? I'm such a dumbass."
I glanced up at my partner in crime, Joey. His tongue poked out as he continued to doodle on his Maths book.
"Oh Joey, you're far from dumb."
I smiled weakly, I believed my last statement, but he obviously didn't, changing his glance from my book to his. His heart obviously belongs somewhere else, and he knows that.
"But look at your book!" He said, grabbing my book from my reach.
"You're such a smartass. I got lost when they started adding english to maths! Why are there letters?!" He replied, staring at my book at all angles.
"My love, it's called algebra." I snatched it from him. "It's not so hard... When you actually listen..."
I placed my book down and glanced at his doodles again. There was a rainbow, a spaceship and a strange looking rodent. He clearly has an extremely vivid imagination.
"It's not my fault, but maths is so freakin' boring!"

I giggled at his response, he was just like a child. He smiled, before hiccupping loudly, and jumping out of his skin, I giggled again at him, and he laughed with me. It was times like this when I realised how much Joey actually meant to me. We've been friends for about 12 years now, and we still get on like a house on fire. He's the Batman to my Robin, and no-one could ever come above him. Of course, he often has girlfriends, as he is such a hit with the girls, with his floppy hair and wonky smile. The truth is that they never last long however, and whenever he's had a recent breakup, I'd visit him with Halo 3 and ice cream. He'd tell me that "No-one could ever compare to you." And I'd feel great again. I'm not particularly romantically attracted to him, but he's my best friend, and I honestly don't know what I'd do without him.
As we're always alone, of course, everyone assumes we're together. The truth is that I don't actually have any other friends, and Joey means so much because he could literally be friends with any other person in this entire faculty, but he chooses to be friends with little, awkward me. I guess that's why I'm so protective of him. I know that any day, he could just leave me, and that could be the worse thing to ever happen. But he wouldn't do that.

"Lucie?"
"Yes, Joey?"
"The class is over."
I looked up, and the classroom was empty. This often happened to me, lost in a daydream, and misses the bell. You'd be surprised, however, as the school bell can be particularly loud. I don't know how I manage that. Joey smiled at me from the corner of my eye. I grabbed my books and headed out the door, brushing my brown hair from my eyes.

It was last period, which meant now we were able to go home. Joey literally lived a few doors down from me, so we often sat next to each other on the bus home, and sometimes walked when it was warm.
After saying a goodbye to my friend, I headed through my front door. My house was surprisingly silent considering the four siblings I have. Usually people are just running in and out of our house, throwing toys and imaginative games everywhere. Intrigued, I entered the kitchen, and there was my mom, my dad, and my brothers and sisters.
"What's up, guys?"
"Your mother will explain to you." My dad looked serious. I looked down at Bethan, my sister. She looked like she had been crying.
"My work is being transferred to England."
I didn't get what the fuss was about. "So? That's great isn't it! I'll remind you to get me a souvenir!"
"Lucie... You don't understand."
"We have to go with her!" Bethan piped up.
I tried to swallow, but the action became impossible. "When?" I could barely choke out a whisper. My eyes fluttering and threatening to water. My vision blurring.
"This is going to seem soon, I'm sorry, but it's next week. I just need to guys to cooperate with me. Just for now. I know about Joey, but I promise you can keep contact and..."
"What can you honestly promise?! That I'll be able to talk to him?! But you know how it goes! You talk for about a month, and then they forget all about you! He could be the most popular guy in school and I'M THE ONE WEIGHING HIM DOWN!"
I realised what I had just said. Perhaps it was better if I just left. Perhaps Joey would be able to have the lifestyle he would have wanted. Have the friends he could have had.
I sighed. How would I break this to him tomorrow, without breaking myself?
