Chapter 1

Last hope

by: Celena
I was sitting on the rock looking out at the calm waters below me, pulling my sweater close around my body. I had been waiting for him for over an hour and if he diind't show up in the next ten I was leaving.
My name is Breeilifauna. I'm 14 years old and live in a small town where you are married off by the age of 15 and unfortuantely, my fifteenth birthday was in a month and one week. Meaning I had one week to find somebody who was willing ot marry me.
That was why I was standing on the rock over the lake at ten at night. It was 32 degrees and I shoudl probably go home and try again tomorrow. But this was important. I needed to know if he wanted to marry me, because if he didn't then ... I could just tell my m om to go ahead and start looking for someone for me.
`snap!`
I turned towards the noise and saw that it was just Jake.
"Hey," I said quietly, relieved tha the came.
"Hey. Sorry, I'm late. My mom stayed up later than usual." He said as he walked up next to me.
I nodded as kept staring out at the lake in front of me. It was cold and I was exhauseted so I might as well get it over with.
"Do you like me?" I asked quietly. I knew it may have sounded like a stupoid questiona and it may have been. But it was the first thing that popped out of my mouth.
"Of course. You're my best friend. If I didn't like you I wouldn't be here," Jake said, just as serious as ever.
"No. I meant, do you like me, like me? Like enough to marry?" I said the last part in an almost imperceptible whisper.
"Oh..."
I waited for a while, both of us silent. Him thinking and me feeling like an idiot, because of course he didn't like me like that. It wasn't like I was beautiful or anything. I was just ordinary. I was just me.
"Never mind," I said, standing up . I brushed the dirt off of my butt and stretched my limbs.
"I'm sorry. Its just that, I can't. I love you Bree, but you're like a sister. Could you imagine us together like that? Like we're expected to be?" he asked s he stood up with me.
"I understand. And it's okay. Ummm, I was just, you know, wondering. It's no big deal. Thanks though, for not lying to me." I said as my last piece of hope died.
"You're welcome."
"I better get going. I'll see you later Jake." I said as I started walking back into the forest.
"Tomorrow, behind the barn. I have a present for you. Meet me there?" he asked as he caught up to me.
I nodded, "Sure."
Jake smiled, gave me a hug and started towards his home which was at the opposite side of the district than mine.
I started towards home, for one o fthe last few nights I'd get to be home and single.
