Prologue - Googbyes

PROLOGUE - Goodbyes

"I remember that like it was yesterday!" I laughed through a mouthful of Reuben. My best friends and I were sitting in a little café in the airport. My flight wasn't for another two hours, so we decided to eat and reminisce on the good ol' days. We sat there laughing and making fools of ourselves, not a care in the world. We were living in the moment and we had each other. That's all we cared about. The smell of fresh bread wafting through the air and the ambiance of the neutral tones that decorated the café made us all realize the chemistry we had with each other. I must've looked funny, just smiling at the two coolest guys in the world, but I had just now figured out that they meant so much to me…

"Remember when Joe asked you to Homecoming our freshman year? He was so awestruck by Megan Roberts, the cheerleader, " Darren piped up, knocking me out of my trance.

I looked over at Joe, who had his head hung low over his soup in embarrassment. "I DO remember that! And remember what I told him?" I giggled.

"The exact words! And I quote, 'Oh, Joey, I don't know what to say… You're such a nerd, and I'm one of the most popular girls in school. I'm cheerleader for sakes! So, I'm sorry, but I have no choice but to say yes…'" he mimicked in a high-pitched voice. "You were so sincere he thought you rejected him! I remember he came sulking to me all upset, and told me what you had said. I tried so hard to keep it together when he realized you accepted!"

"And remember the way he pranced around the hallways once word got around? Now THAT was hi-"

"Okay, we get! I was a nerd!" A red-faced Joe interrupted. "But remember, I know some good dirt on you… Last year, our first year at college together… Miss Hannigan here fell off stage into the orchestra pit during "Annie". And I have it on video!"

"I might have been a cheerleader throughout my entire high school career, but I STILL can't walk in a pair of heels… " I said, not giving Joe the reaction he wanted.

"You're no fun," I heard him mumble.

"She's tons of fun! Why would be best friends for six years if she weren't? I have a point there, don't I?" Darren said as-a-matter-of-factly, with the Russian accent he'd perfected in eleventh grade.

"Not the accents again!" I laughed, a hint of Australian could be found in my voice. Accents were a little inside joke between us. Back in theatre three in our junior year, our teacher decided to teach us dialects. We spent hours afterschool together, testing accents and giving each other pointers. It was just us three, the theatre boy, the cheerleader, and the nerd, and we were the best of friends out of the entire high school.

~~~~~~Darren POV~~~~~
Oh no… She's going Aussie on us! I thought to myself. Megan was the best friend I could ask for. Well, except for maybe Joe. She had a certain glow about her that attracted people like moths to a flame. But, luckily for Joe and I, we were the only two she decided to hang with. And Joe… You can't describe him in any other way but, "Joe." I loved these guys like family, heck, they WERE my family. We spent every moment possible together. Whether it be goofing off in class or late night movie parties at Joe's apartment.
We sat there laughing, spitting accents back and forth, until Megan looked at her phone. "Thirty minutes till my flight leaves," she said dejectedly. "I guess we better start heading over there."
"Okay…" Joe murmured quietly. He was taking it pretty hard. He has always had feelings for Megan, but he didn't want to admit it to himself. Everybody else could see it except for Megan. I think they both have feelings for each other. There's a spark, you just have to kindle the flame…
We left the café and headed over to the terminal and just stood there, just wanting to save the moment. I didn't want Megan to go, but sometimes you just have let fate choose its own path.
~~~~~Megan POV~~~~~

We stood there in silence for while, my vision darting back and forth between by two best friends. I didn't want to leave them, and they didn't want me to go. I could feel the tears staring to well up in my eyes, and I couldn't hold it any longer. I dropped my bags and hugged my guys, sobbing onto Joe's shoulder. "I'm going to miss you two more than anything else," I whimpered. My only reply was getting a tighter squeeze from them. "I love you two. You're the only real family I've ever had. I was lost until I met the two of you the first day of high school, in theatre."

"I love you too…" I heard Joe whisper softly. I looked up at him and grinned, black streaks from my mascara running down my face.

"Oh I almost forgot!" I jumped up and started digging through my purse. "I found these when I was packing," I said sweetly, pulling out a couple of photos from my purse. "Remember the day this was taken?" I asked handing them each a copy. The way their faces brightened let me know that this was a good present. It was a picture of Darren lying across my and Joe's arms while we held him up. That was our last day of high school…

"Where'd you get this?" Darren asked curiously, a big grin on his face.

"Honestly, I found it in my sock drawer curled up with a pair of fuzzy penguin socks…"

"Only you…" he laughed.

Joe opened his mouth as is to say something, but I cut him off. "You're welcome," I smiled. Joe and I shared a mental link, one even stronger than the one between Darren. I looked into his blue eyes and saw the glimmer of happiness mixed with sadness in them. I felt the same way…

"Flight 249 to Chicago, now boarding," a lady called over the intercom. I felt my heart break just that much more. I went to hug them one last time. They met me with an embrace that could have easily crushed me under any other circumstance, but I didn't mind it this time. My face buried in their shoulders, I made one final request. "Promise me that you two will become famous. I want to be able to see something about you on my computer or television and proudly say, 'Those are my two best friends.' And you better keep in touch. You have my number and email. Well, I better get going. That plane isn't going to wait just for me." I broke away to give Darren a peck on the cheek. When it was Joe's turn, he turned at the wrong moment and our lips collided…

~~~~~Joe's POV~~~~~
I turned to tell Megan goodbye one last time, when our lips met. I knew that she had been aiming for my cheek. She jumped a bit from shock and tried to pull away out of embarrassment, but I just wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her closer to me. Almost instantly, she relaxed purposely kissing me. I could taste a hint of cherry from her lip balm and the scent of coconut found its way into my nose from her hair. Her hands had found their away my neck and were pulling me in closer. Finally, I had her in my arms…
~~~~~Megan's POV~~~~~

I was shocked when we first kissed, and I tried to pull away. But, Joe just pulled me in closer. I felt so safe and secure in his arms and it seemed like the world had stopped around us. I let my body unwind and melt into him, kissing back. My hands found their way to his, pulling him in closer. Is this what I had really missed out on all these years? I was glad to be there, just me and him, finally proclaiming our love for each other… But then I was t-boned back to reality.

"Last call for Flight 249 to Chicago."

~~~~~Joe's POV~~~
Suddenly, Megan broke away. Her cheeks were pink from embarrassment and her large grey eyes opened wide in alarm. She scrambled around, trying to pick up her bags. "Uh… Bye guys," she sighed, hugging each one of us one last time before she left. "Keep Michigan fun!"
"Good luck in Chicago!" Darren called out to her. I couldn't bring my mouth to form any words. I felt my heart break each time she took a step. Right before she disappeared, Megan turned and waved back at us. I returned the gesture. But, I just couldn't stop thinking, This is the last time I will see that dark brown hair, the last time I see those beautiful grey eyes, those adorable freckles, hear that sweet voice… She's gone…
"That's one heck of way to say goodbye," Darren muttered, elbowing my side. I didn't reply, just stood there, staring at the terminal, hoping she would come back.
