Chapter 1
My Love, my life.
Newark, New Jersey September 10, 2001 10:00 PM
The glow from the moonlight entered the room as I held the love of my life close to me. "It's so pretty," a soft voice proclaim's turning to look out the window at the full moon, "you know I used to believe that when I died I would live on the moon. It's such a beauty to look at." "It's nothing compared to you," I smiled against the back of her neck, "you are all the beauty in the universe." "You are such a suck up," she laugh's while rolling me onto my back and swinging her legs to either side of me. "Well someone is in a rush tonight," I smiled pulling her face close to mine, "and I wanted to savor tonight." Kissing her lips, I soon feel her start to melt away into my embrace. The moon was the only light throughout the night as we said our goodbyes. For the next day, my love would depart for San Francisco and I would be left at home to care for our only child.

"Today's the day," Liz smiled as she reached over and kissed me. "It's time already?" I asked squinting my eyes. "Yeah," she smiled, "I need to leave for the airport in an hour." "Did you wake up Jason?" I asked her sitting up in bed, "he said he wanted to see you off." "Let him sleep," she whispered while leaning in for another kiss, "plus the taxi should be here any minute." "Do you have to go?" I ask her pulling her close to me, "can't you just leave tomorrow or something?" Laughing and pushing away from me, Liz stood up and walked to the door. "If I don't take this," she started to say turning to face me in the doorway, "then I won't be able to have a steady income from this job." "Yeah," I sighed standing to my feet and walking to her, "but why California? That's such a big change, especially for Jason, he just started middle school." "We talked about all of this," Liz said in a tone that told me she was not going to budge, "don't forget to pack the rest of the dishes and DON'T forget to call the school counselor and have them send Jason's records to the new school." "Don't worry," I smiled, "You taught me well." "Dork," Liz laughed hugging me.
A honk outside of the house, broke us of our embrace as Liz rushed to the door to let the taxi driver know she was on her way out. Grabbing her bags, I walked her to the taxi. After all her things were placed in the trunk, I turned to give her one last kiss. "I'm going to miss you," I say to her, "but we men can hold the fort for a bit, as long as you hold down the other one for us." "Don't worry," she smiled giving me a quick peck on the lips, "it only takes one woman to hold down a fort." Laughing, I held the door for her as she slid into the seat. "Mom!" a voice yelled from inside the house as our son Jason sprinted to the cab. "Jason baby," Liz smiled as she unrolled her window to tell him her goodbye's for now. "Mom I love you," Jason said reaching in to give her a kiss on the cheek, "and don't worry about dad, I'll take care of him." "My main man," she smiled squeezing his arm, "you do that for me alright? I love you." "Love you too mom," Jason said pulling away and stepping on the curb. We both stood outside the house waving to the cab until it disappeared around a corner.
"So you gonna get ready for school?" I ask Jason as we make our way back into the house. "I figured you need help packing," Jason smiled, "so I decided to stay home today and help out." "Right," I laughed, "and your mother would kill me if I let you skip school to help out." "Well seeing as how I'm leaving school," Jason started to explain, "there is nothing there that I can do. All the teachers keep giving me coloring pages and crossword puzzles." "Fine," I say giving in to defeat, "you are just like your mother always gets me to give in some how." "No," Jason smiled, "I'm like you, I explain the obvious." Brat, I thought to myself, he has no idea how much he looks like his mother.
7:30 AM
The house phone rang as Jason and I loaded the last bit of dishes into the moving truck. Jason ran to the phone leaving me to finish the cleaning that needed to be done in the kitchen. "Dad it's mom," Jason announced bringing the phone into the kitchen, "she says she is boarding the plane now and will call when she lands." "Tell your mother I love her," I say sweeping the floor boards, "and to be safe." "Dad doesn't think you can handle yourself," Jason laughed into the receiver, "he says be safe and he loves you." Stopping and looking at Jason laugh, I start to smile to myself. He seems fine with the move, I thought to myself, he's happy. "Mom say's she loves you and wants to know why I'm not in school." "Crap," I whispered taking the phone from Jason. Handing him the broom, I move to the living room with the phone. "Hi babe," I laugh like I had been caught stealing candy as a kid, "how is everything?" "Why isn't he in school Rem?" "Well he had a pretty convincing story," I laugh again, "but I'm working him hard at home, so he's being a big help." "Alright," Liz laughed, "well I'll call when I land. I love you Rem." "I love you Liz," I say as I hang up the phone and resume cleaning.
8:52 AM
"Dad!" Jason's voice screamed from the living room, "Dad hurry!" The urgency in his voice told me something was wrong as I made my way to the front room. The images of a burning building was flashing on the screen, as a reporter explained what had happened. A plane had crashed into the one of the Twin Towers. "Turn it up," I ask him taking a seat at the edge of the couch. Jason and I watched in horror as people ran for their lives. With in 15 minutes another plane came into view, crashing into the tower. "Oh my God," I gasped at the images on the screen. "Mom," Jason said with panic in his voice, "Dad we need to call Mom!" Running to the phone I dialed, Liz's cell number. I was sent straight to voice mail and I began to shake. "Liz baby," I said softly into the phone, "please answer the phone, its an emergency. Please be safe. I love you baby." Tears started to roll down my eyes as I assumed the worse. Taking the phone from me Jason started to talk to the message system. "Mom," Jason said trying to hide the panic in his voice, "please call us back." Hanging up the phone we returned to the television.
While we continued to watch the news, I urgently tried to contact the airline services. We watched in horrific silence as reports of another plane crashing into the Pentagon came flooding in to the news. It was now confirmed the planes had intentionally crashed into the buildings. "Jason," I spoke softly to him, "go to your room." "But dad!" Jason shouted at me, "I-" "Go!" I yelled at him as I stood up to shout back at him, "I think you have seen enough you don't have to sit here and watch the rest." Jason stood up and walked to his room, slamming his door.
9:47 AM
"Can't I please get a real person!" I shouted slamming my fist into the wall. My attempts to contact the airline were in vain as I shouted in anger. Liz, my mind flashed with images of her smile and her face, please be safe. If I could ask God for one thing, I thought, I would ask for you to make it home to us. Just as I finished my thoughts the phone in my hand rang.
"Hello?" I ask in a rush as I realized the number on the ID, "Liz baby please tell me something good." "I wish I could Rem," Liz's voice cried on the other side of the line, "Rem honey, I love you. Where is Jason?" "Jason!" I shouted, "Jason get out here!" Jason ran to the phone as I listened to the noise in the background of Liz's call. "Jason it's your mother," I told him trying to keep my voice calm. Handing him the phone, I soon seen the look of terror on his face. "Why are you talking like that?!" Jason shouted, "Mom, what are you saying?" "Jason," I sighed placing a hand on his shoulder. "Mom I love you!" Jason cried into the phone, "don't leave us." Handing the phone to me, Jason ran off to his room and slammed his door again. "Baby," Liz's voice came on the line, "I love you both and I'm not sure I'm going to have the chance to say that again." "Liz don't give up hope," I said my voice shaking, "you'll be home soon." "Remember me when you see the moon," Liz said starting to cry, "don't let our baby forget who I am." "I would never forget," I cried on the phone, "just don't leave us. I love you Liz." "I need to go Rem," Liz said still crying on the other side of the line, "I'm letting someone use my phone to call their family. They are trying to take back the plane babe, I might make it back home. I love you." "I love you!" I shouted into the receiver as it went dead. "Liz!" I continued to shout into the phone, "come back Liz!"
The glow from the moonlight entered the room as I held the love of my life close to me. "It's so pretty," a soft voice proclaim's turning to look out the window at the full moon, "you know I used to believe that when I died I would live on the moon. It's such a beauty to look at."
