I ran the square brush through my messy hair, trying to untangle it and make it as pretty as possible. It stayed in its straight form, reaching my mid back. I smiled at the girl in the mirror, pleased with her appearance.
Getting up from my chair, I ran over to the coat hanger and grabbed my jacket from the hook.
"Mom!" I shouted, "I'm going to the mall."
"Have fun, Kat!" She yelled back.
I sighed deeply. My mom really didn't care what I did. Come to think of it, she didn't really care about me, only my older brother. Yes, the cliche star football player brother with perfect grades going to an ivy league college in the summer.
It didn't matter what I did, my brother's accomplishments would always outshine mine. But I've learned to accept this and know where I stand. I am the not so perfect younger daughter. But this didn't matter much to me, there were much worse rolls to play.
I walked out the front door and into the chilly London air. I'm not actually British, but I moved here a few months ago after the death of my dad. I shivered as I climbed into my father's car and cranked the heat up. My father had died about 5 months ago. It was terribly hard to deal with, but I've accepted this and moved on, just like everyone else in my family. But my mother keeps all his possessions. She feels it would be an insult to his memory not to. I inherited his car.
I was meeting my friend Lily at the mall. Lily and I have been best friends since second grade. Nothing has changed, even now when we're 17 years old. We actually met in the US, but Lily's parents moved to London when she was in fifth grade, but we never lost touch. Me moving here was a complete shock to both of us, but we were both excited to be reunited.
I pulled into the parking lot and spotted Lily standing outside near the entrance to Bloomingdales. I parked and ran over to greet her.
"Hey!" I said enthusiastically.
"Hi Kat! Let's go shopping!" She yelled.
I laughed as she grabbed my hand and pulled me into the mall. She stopped for a minute to decide which store to go to. Soon enough, she was dragging me towards Victoria's Secret.
Lily was shopping obsessed. She's always been like this, whatever she wants, she gets.
But it doesn't matter, because she has the money to spend. Her dad is a movie producer and her mom does something with real estate. She's completely rich.
But we pranced around the mall for a while, talking and laughing and shopping when we finally decided it was time for a lunch break.
We began to walk towards the food court when Lily stopped short and let out an earsplitting scream.
"What?" I shouted frantically. "What's wrong?"
She said nothing, just pointed ahead of her. I followed her gaze and was shocked by what I saw. Standing there, right in the middle of the mall, was my favorite band, One Direction.
