Chapter 3

Dead or Alive

After dinner we went home and invited Jack to stay over, but he said that he couldn't and wouldn't want to intrude. So, as we reached home, I gave him a kiss goodnight, then rushed into the house and flopped onto the couch. Immediately, I was asleep...

Tis that a soldier from your own side whose stabbed you?

1am

I shrieked and darted upward, awakening to a sharp pain on my heart. I breathed heavily, my eyes searching the room. Blood. Death. Betrayal. A voice whispered into my ears.

"Who's there?" I spoke nervously, sweat dripping down my forehead. STAB! The scream penetrated my ears and an electrifying pain quickly jerked through my body.

"AGH!" I screamed.

"Alice! What on earth is going on down here?" A light flicked on and Mother stood at the bottom of the steps, her nightgown lightly drifting across the floor as she glided towards me.

"It hurts!" I yelled, tears beginning to stream down my face.

"Alice! What on earth?" She dipped her finger under my eye and pulled it away. The tears I shed were black.

"Frank!" Mother cried. "Come quickly!" Father peared over the edge of the stairs, then rushed down.

"What?" He rubbed his face hard, as if he hadn't even heard my calls and had just awoke.

"Look..." The black tears continued pouring from my eyes and soon I felt another pain in my heart, but it wasn't quick this time. It felt like someone was grasping my heart in their hands and squeezing the life out of me. I screamed louder than ever before. Louder than I had ever heard anyone scream in their life. Papa and Mama covered their ears at the painful sound and Papa looked at Mama anxciously.

"She needs to get to a hospital."

"MAKE IT STOP!" I screamed, grasping my chest and balling. Papa lifted me from the couch and rushed to the car. Mama grabbed her purse and mobile phone, then rushed out behind Papa. Father sat with me in the back seat, petting my hair and hushing me, telling me everything would be fine. Though, I knew it wouldn't. My eyesight was blurring and my depth perception was completely off. The world seemed to be spinning and I could hardly breathe.

"We're almost there, Alice. Don't worry child." Mama said, worriedly. She pulled into the hospital parking lot and Papa carried me inside, Mama following behind.

"We need to see the doctor. Immediately." He demanded at the front desk.

"Sorry, sir but--Oh my..." She starred down at my black face. Suddenly, the pain burst through my heart again and I could swear I felt a vein in my heart explode. I screeched again, but tried to muffle it, so I didn't wake any sleeping patients.

"Yes, right this way," the woman said, leading us down the hallway. The next thing I knew I was in a surgery room, writhing and yelping in pain. A nurse covered my face with a plastic mask as fast as she could and I soon passed out. I'm not sure what happened in the next few moments because, well...I was blacked out. I only remember one thing and that was a pale hand with bright red nailpolish reaching toward me and grasping my neck. Death reaches for your neck. A soft, evil voice whispered. Greet it kindly, and perhaps it shall give you mercy. Then, I was gradually pulled awake.

"Alice, dear."

"Alli?"

Voices surrounded me, but all I saw was darkness.

"Papa?" I called. "Mama?" I looked around the room and sat up.

"Where are you?" I gasped, a tear streaking my face.

"We are right here, Alli. You can't see us?"

"I just see darkness. Papa, I'm frightened...What is happening to me?"

"She's blind." I heard Mother whisper. Suddenly, I felt warmth against my hand and first pulled away, unsure of what it was, but then realised it was only Papa's warm hand comforting me and I grasped it.

"What is going on?"

"We aren't sure, Alli."

"Darling, it's very complicated and even the doctors aren't quite sure what's happening."

"Will I live?" There was a long silence. "It's fine, Mama...You may tell me."

"It's uncertain."

"Alli, we love you....so much." Father kissed my knuckles, then released my hand. Suddenly, I felt Mama brush hair from my forehead, then kiss it.

"Don't leave us, Alice." She whispered into my ear, though I could barely hear it.

"What?"

"Don't leave us, Alice, dear...please." She repeated, a bit louder.

"I won't..." I then drifted off and fell asleep for the last time.

I gasped. My breath moved quickly and I glanced around the room I was in. It was dark, but I could tell it was a dungeon.

"What's going on? Am I dreaming?" I asked myself aloud.

"Course not." A girl answered. I glanced towards the voice and saw a young woman, about my age standing between the bars of the cell I was in. Though, don't be thinking she was between two bars, no. She was standing right in the center of one bar, her body ghostlike. She was wearing a black tanktop and black shorts, both lined with pink fuzz. Her hair was an electifying bright pink and she had two fuzzy pink cat ears with purple insides situated at the top of her head. Also, she had two black, fingerless gloves on, also lined with pink at the end, and no shoes. Her smile was bright and huge, about a mile long, I'd say.

"How...How are you doing that? I asked, hesitantly.

"Doing what?" She questioned back, stepping forward out of the bars. Her body was now more tangible looking.

"Nothing..." I sighed.

"You must be Alice." She grinned.

"I am. Who are you?"

"Christy C. Catiney or CCC. Friends call me Chess." She continued smiling and slowly advanced towards me, looking me up and down.

"You sure you're Alice?"

"My name is Alice...but I don't know you, so..."

"No, I know that. I don't not know you, though." She grinned, then winked and slowly began to vanish.

"Wait! Where am I? How do I get out? What's going on?" The girl's smile was all that was left floating in the air and it said,

"Wonderland. Escape. You tell me." With that it grinned once more and vanished. I attempted to walk through the bars like the girl had, but it was no use. I was perfectly tangible.

"Someone help me! Please!" I called. Suddenly, one of the girl's arms appeared and pointed toward a brick wall in my cell. I crawled towards it.

"I want her head off by sunrise, do you understand?" An angry, peircing voice spoke from the top of the staircase situated a few feet away.

"Yes your majesty." A man's voice replied. After hearing this, I pushed on the brick wall to see what would happen and naturally a brick pushed inward and a small hole was formed. I attempted to crawl through it, but failed, much too large to fit.

"What do you expect me to do now?!" I exclaimed.

"Sh! Or she'll hear you!" The girl's mouth reappeared, then her head. "Try the bottle, silly!" She exclaimed, laughing insanely.

"What on earth are you talking about?!" I yelled in a whisper. An arm appeared and pointed to a bottle sitting just beyond the bars. I crawled to it and reached for it, but it was just barely too far away.

"Get it for me?" The girl sighed.

"Must I do everything?"

"Well, excuse me for being trapped in a cell!" I shouted angrily.

"Hush! I'm getting it! Jeez!" She grabbed the bottle and tossed it to me. I read the tag dangling from the side. The paper was yellowing and burnt, obviously extremely old, and the bottle looked like it had been in a fire as well. The black ink which read Drink Me was melting across the tag. I popped the cork off and sniffed it. The scent of mint and tobacco whafted out of the bottle. In a way, I liked the scent. It reminded me of Uncle Jack. Where is Uncle Jack? I thought. Then, I sucked down the liquid, but only a few drops for I couldn't stand the taste.

"UGH!" I screeched and made a disgusted face. I coughed a few times, nearly throwing up, then stood. Suddenly, I felt myself becoming smaller. I shrunk down to the size of the bottle, or even a bit smaller. My dress was lying on top of me and I wasn't quite sure how I was to get clothing. Suddenly, a hand reached under the large dress, holding a smaller one.

"Put it on..." Christy said. I squeezed into the dress, which fit perfectly, then rushed over to the brick wall. I climbed through the hole and whispered a thank you to the air, for I wasn't sure where Chess had disappeared to. I slid through the hole and my mouth dropped open as I stared into the huge, dark, abyss of a place lying before me.
