Chapter 1

Strange Feeling

"Honey hurry up!"

Mom yells at me again for being slow. I'm being forced to carry my own boxes from my room on the third floor to the moving van. I'm only six, can she really expect me to carry eleven boxes of my own clothes, dolls, and personal belongings down three flights of stairs?

I sigh. It's so hard to do everything by myself. I start sliding the box hoping this way of moving it would be faster and easier. It's not. I slide the box to the edge of the stairs and it tumbles down the first flight of stairs.

Heh. That was fun to watch. I slide the box towards the stairs again. Is it just me or does this box feel heavier than before? The box tumbles down the second flight of stairs and then down the third flight of stairs. But the top comes off and some of my things fall out.

I pick my lunch box and doll up off the floor, and notice a picture near the stairs. I don't recognize the girls in the picture. They look almost like twins, both with straight black hair and heavy black makeup. Strange though, they look about my age and they're wearing all that makeup. Who are they?

I tuck the picture away with the rest of my things in the box. Almost to the door. I hope Mom is happy that I brought all of my boxes down by myself. When I reach the door, I feel all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Is someone looking at me? I turn around quickly but there is no one there. I finish pulling the box outside and notice Mom staring at something.

"Mom I finally got all the boxes down. Mom? Are you listening?" I pull on her arm and she looks at me angrily.

"Ava, mommy has a hurt arm. Please try not to pull on it sweetie. Have you seen your dad? It's almost time to leave and we have a long drive to make."

I haven't seen Dad. Maybe I should look for him. I go around to the back side of the house. Not here. Could he be in the barn? I walk down towards the barn and I get that feeling again. I stand still for a few seconds then turn around.

"Ava, where are you going? It's time to leave baby girl." Dad picks me up and tickles me.

"Daddy! Stop it, that tickles!" I laugh loudly until he finally stops and puts me down.

"Well I finished putting your last box into the moving van. Are you ready to say goodbye to the house?"

Well that did it. My bottom lip started quivering as we walked back up to the front yard. Mom was in her car ready to leave. I let go of Dad's hand, and look up to where my room was.

"Goodbye," I whispered. As I walked towards the car, it almost seemed like it whispered back to me, "We'll meet again soon, Ava."
