I froze right where I was.
"Um, I was just...um, going to help with party preparations." It wasn't exactly the truth, but it wasn't a lie either.
Sam, my older brother and gardener of the very respectable Baggins', smiled. "Sure you are. Well, whatever your plans are, try not to get in trouble today, Hazelnut. It's quite an important day."
I nodded and left before anything else could be said.
Today was the birthday of old Mr. Bilbo Baggins, which is exciting enough in itself, but I was most looking forward to Gandalf's fireworks. They were always a treat for everyone, especially since they were so occasional. I was also looking forward to dancing with Merry and Pippin, my two best friends who I loved very much. We always had fun together and we were pretty much inseparable.
I also had feelings for Pippin. Only a few people knew about it. I had told Merry and Sam had overheard and he felt the need to tell Frodo about it, maybe because Pippin is Frodo's cousin, but all three are sworn to secrecy. But there is also the fact that Sam doesn't tell anyone else because he doesn't approve of the idea. "He's not worthy enough to be with you, Hazelnut." Sam said, and Frodo would agree.
"Hazelnut!" Merry and Pippin yelled as they jumped out from behind a tree and tackled me in a hug.
"Hey guys. I missed you." I smiled, hugging them back. "So do we have any plans for today?"
"Well," Merry said, "we're going to ride with Gandalf on his way Under Hill, although Frodo will probably be riding with him also."
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go!" I said and grabbed each of their hands and we ran to the main road of Hobbiton. We found Gandalf just as he was greeting Frodo.
"Gandalf!" we yelled simultaneously.
He saw us and smiled. "Well, if it isn't the three young troublemakers." I jumped up on the wagon with Gandalf and hugged him. "I can't wait for the fireworks tonight." I said.
Gandalf chuckled. "I do remember you being on of my more enthusiastic fans when you were younger."
I turned to look at the other three hobbits. "Come on, get on. Don't be shy." I said.
Frodo chuckled and tousled my curly orange hair. "I suppose Sam thinks you're helping at Bilbo's party?"
"Well, he might, but I don't think he believed me."
"I'll let him know you're staying out of trouble.
"Frodo, it seems almost as if you are also Hazelnut's brother." Gandalf commented.
We all laughed. "Sam and Frodo take care of the three of us all the time." Pippin said.
"Even though I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself." I added.
"Your brother is just worried about your safety, Hazelnut. And he should be. It's a dangerous world, even here." Gandalf said.
