Chapter 6

The last thought

Baby, you showed me what living is for
I don't want to hide anymore

You lift my feet off the ground and
You spin me around
You make me crazier, crazier
Feels like I'm falling and
I'm lost in your eyes
You make me crazier,
Crazier, crazier
Crazier, crazier

A dusk setting lies in the lair of Voldemort. I hear voices half a kilometre away… husky male voices and high female voices. The complete extremes… and then Voldemorts’ voice, totally different to the other male voices. But surely Voldemort is so full of toxicity that this is only a slight difference.
I begin to devise a plan before I give myself in, but I feel that my hour is running out. I need some way to save Ginny without dooming her to certain death. Another thought- a thought so devastating, “What if Ginny is already dead?” - runs through my head, but I banish it immediately. I feel my knees shaking and connecting together, threatening failure to keep my body aloft and I try and pull myself together. I must never show weakness to my enemy.
I whisper to Lily’s ghost, “Lily, will you help me?”
A single nod is all it takes for my trust to be put into her and I whisper my plan into her ear. She nods and I try and put on a brave smile. The last few steps towards the voice of Voldemort and terrifying but my love for Ginny pushes me forward.
A bright, sharp fire burns brightly in the clearing where Voldemort and the death eaters stand. Trolls and giants including stand watchfully, listening the words of Voldemort.
“I thought he would come” Voldemort says, his eyes staring at the high flames, “I expected him to come”
Voldemorts eyes flicker to a figure on the ground by his feet, the ginger hair glinting in the firelight. Ginny. I stifle a gasp and her beautiful eyes widen slightly as they find my figure in the bush behind the clearing. I am sure I see a faint smile form on her face but then she shudders and closes her eyes, as though she thinks she has been dreaming. I know it is time to act. I catch Lily’s eye and she nods, motioning to James and Sirius and Lupin to stay with her.
Voldemort continues to speak cruely, his voice penetrating the air like a dagger, “I was, it seems… mistaken.”
“You weren’t” I step out of the shadows and into the bright light of the clearing, keeping my voice fierce and steady. The silence was broken immediately, as people gasped and laughed and trolls growled and swung their clubs for battle.
Ginny’s eyes open fully this time, disbelieving at my presence, shock but also relief in her expression. I let a small lopsided smile form around my lips, but it disappears almost as quickly as it came. Bellatrix, who sat at Voldemorts side, leaps to hear feet, staring eagerly at me and Voldemort. I scowl at her, mustering all the bravery I can.
“Harry Potter,” Voldemort says, a cruel smile on his face, “The boy who lived.”
No one moves, all is still like a frozen movie. I catch a glance at Ginny, knowing it’s now or never. Voldemort raises his wand above his head but before he can send the final spell, I dive at Ginny, pressing my lips against hers, soft and silky. A farewell kiss.
“Goodbye,” I whisper, and three human shapes move through the air wrapping around Ginnys body, taking her to safety, taking her to a life.
And then a flash of green as black shutters pull over my eyeballs. My last thought, “Ginny, I love you”
