Chapter 1

Rachel's Question

“The power won’t transfer completely to a girl that isn’t a virgin.”

That was what he had said. That was what he had repeated to her, over and over, like he was trying to remind her not to engage in anything scandalous, like she had even thought about it. When Percy dropped her for Annabeth, she wasn’t hurt. She knew he liked the blonde. Hades, now the blonde was one of her best friends.

Even though there was no bad blood between Rachel and Percy, he was a big part of the reason she became the Oracle. It was stupid, but there was still the small bit of her that had been thinking, “I’m always going to be second best.” So, she just gave up men all together.

But then there was that sneaking suspicion that maybe she had made the wrong choice. She had given up something that was natural, in return for something so boring and scary that she basically died every time she went into Oracle mode. When the creepy voice spoke through her, her life light dimmed a bit, something Nico had told her multiple times.

Rachel was beginning to realize that maybe she had (a) been lied to, and (b) made a rash decision…

“Rachel, babe,” the male model Apollo said, whipping off his sunglasses and tossing his hair. “You gotta…chillax.”

She arched an eyebrow. “Is that even a word?”

The god shrugged. “Hades if I know.”

Rachel rolled her eyes. “So, I have a question.”

“Shoot,” he said, making a finger gun at her. “I’m all ears. Well, not really, but I’m listening. It would be weird if I was all ears. I mean, this gorgeous face would just be missed so much—”

“Is it true that I have to stay pure?”

Apollo arched a golden eyebrow. “Why do you ask?”

“You’re not exactly known for being very…honest,” she said carefully, obviously hinting to his multiple affairs with goddesses, mortals, and Demigods alike. It was common knowledge that Demigods weren’t blood related because of some Olympian defect (like not having blood) and so Apollo’s dalliances weren’t something that had normally bothered her in that sense—or really anyone—but it was still…worrying.

“So I told a few white lies.”

“A few. Uh huh.”

“Babe, relax. Oracles and boyfriends don’t mix well.”

“Why not?”

“Because a jealous, all powerful immortal is in the picture, babe.” He winked, leaning back in his chaise chair. “And you know I’d just set the guy on fire or run him through with an arrow,” he muttered.

“So is it true or not?”

He smiled. “Wouldn’t you like to know.” After a moment of Rachel’s glare he sighed. “Okay, so it’s possible that some of it is just me being territorial.” At her smile, he hurried to add, “But go ahead, babe, have your men, but see what happens to them after. I dare you.”

“In case you’ve forgotten, Apollo,” she said, the smile still plastered on her lips, “my name is dare.”
