Chapter 9

The Tale of the 39 Legacies

Thanks for all the support, I mean really. You guys are great. :D
Oh, and just a heads-up. Most of this story is going to be a short tale. You'll see. :)

~~~~~
Draco's POV:
When she led me down this hallway, I noticed I've never been here before. I've never even seen it. Glancing around, I got a strange feeling that we weren't supposed to be here. Then I saw the dark rectangle on the wall. Obviously someone had used the Incendio spell on whatever picture was previously here.
"I... I don't kn- This isn't supposed... Draco.." May said, turning to face me.
"Incendio." I whispered to her.
She nodded her head, "Why would somebody burn a portrait?"
"Because it knew too much? Said something that wasn't meant to be said?" I replied.
I watched her as she pondered those possibilities.
"May what relation do you have to this painting?" I asked.
"Well, I was walking down the corridor, then the painting spoke to me. Out of nowhere, really. It told me about this," she said, pointing at her ring, "And it told me things about myself. Things, I suppose, I didn't even know."
"I'm curious May. What things did it say? Who was in the painting? What- what did it look like?" I frantically whispered to her.
"It was an older man. He was dressed in all black, sitting in a chair, and the background of the portrait was red. I've never seen him before! He told me that a family member before me had one as well. And I'd do "great deeds". What the heck?! What is that supposed to mean?" She asked.
"We need to tell Professor Dumbledore about this right now." I said taking her hand.
"Okay.. alright. Let's go." She nodded her head.
May's POV:
We got to Dumbledore's office only to find out he wasn't there.
"Typical." I heard Draco mutter under his breath.
"What do you mean?" I turned towards him.
"Nothing... I just can't believe he's not here!"
"It doesn't matter. There are plenty more teachers. Let's go find McGonagall." I said.
"I suppose." He said. And we turned towards her classroom.
We walked in silence for a while. My head was sort of exploding with confusion and worry. I had no room left to think about anything! And as a Ravenclaw, my thoughts are never jumbled. They are always neatly settled in their own spot in line, waiting for their turn to be analyzed. But no. Not now. This really irked me and I let out a frustrated huff.
"What?" Draco said looking at me, obviously humoured by my frustration. How sweet...
"Confused." I muttered.
"I can tell."
"I can see that."
"Good. You should."
"I do."
"Great."
"You're ridiculous."
"I am?"
"You are."
We looked at each other then and burst into quiet laughter.
"Thanks, I needed that." I said, wiping away a tear.
He laughed lightly, "No problem."
I tuned back into my thoughts. My mind was miracously cleared. And in the empty space lay an idea. A thought. An answer.
My face lit up again.
Draco's POV:
She was on to something, I could see it. But before I could ask her what, we had ran into McGonagall's door. Only before I could reach for the handle, May had spun around and started walking back the way we came.
"Draco I got it." She said calmly. I could hear the excitement in her voice though, trying to be tamed.
I followed her and we sat down on a nearby bench.
"The 39 Legacies." She said simply, a brilliant smile on her face.
May's POV:
I got it! I had figured it out! The ring, it wasn't just a gift. It wasn't a creepy tracking device- nor an unfamiliar object. Not in the slightest! But Draco was right about one thing. It's an heirloom. And one of many belonging to my family.
Heck, this ring (along with Ray and Monica's) was one of The 39 Legacies!
Confused? Don't worry- so is Draco. I'll explain.
Back when Grandma Roccati was alive and we were all still very small, she used to sit Derek, Ray, Monica, and I down and tell us stories. Sometimes they were adventurous. Sometimes scary. Often, though, they were simply exciting. She was an excellent storyteller, I'll give her that. And she never bore us. Never.
Once, just after my 8th Christmas, Grandma Roccati brought us into her living room and told us a story. One she'd never told us before.
~
"Ooo Woccati what story will you twell?" A young excited Monica asked.
"Hush dear, this is a new one for everybody. Even you Derek." Grandma Roccati answered.
"But Grandma Roccati, I thought I'd heard all of the stories." Derek said in a very know-it-all little voice.
"Not this one! Are you all ready?" She said.
Four eager heads nodded back.
"Well then, let's begin;
Once, long ago a group of three brave wizards set out on a very important adventure. For them, it was just another day of exploring. But for the wizarding world, it was a day soon to be never-forgotten! These wizards were very powerful and loved by many. But some disliked them as well. Because when you're an explorer, you can accidentally pick up a few enemies along the way. Some people hated the wizards so much, that they threatened them. The threats were so bad, the wizards agreed amongst themselves to stop giving personal information. They had to keep everything that could be used against them a secret. Even their names. Or else, they could be harmed! And so, they called each other L, J, and G. The reason was only between them.
Anyways, L, J, and G set out on this mission. They had heard rumours in the last town they stayed in. Rumours that a magnificent jewel could be found in the deepest, darkest, coldest corner of the local cave. The cave that had named the town of Battered Body. Eerie name, don't you agree? And it fit the cave perfectly. Battered Body Cave was dangerous. Even for wizards and witches. But once the explorers heard of Battered Body, they were only intrigued by the idea of a new adventure. They set out to find the cave, armed with countless magical objects, the most expansive minds imaginable, and ready souls aching for a new experience. L, J, and G traveled deep into the cave. Deep deep and deeper. Some say they traveled for days. Some say months. And unfortunately, they weren't in the best shape. In fact, each had gone slightly crazy. Crazy in their own way. It's said L became extremely paranoid and secluded himself at the back of the group whenever he could. J had developed Phonophobia. It was hard for him to contain himself, due to the continuous falling of rocks, flying of bats, and echoes of traveling. Often he would cry, with made him even more frightened, with set off L. But perhaps worse of all, was G. He was lovesick. He would miss his wife Clarie so much, he couldn't walk or move at all at times. The states that the trio were in made it almost impossible for them to move forward. But the thing that kept them moving on? The thrill. None had ever experienced any type of mental uncertainty in their lives. The new feelings were just that... new. Terrible. Annoying. Awful. But new, exciting, and adventurous! And that's what they lived for. That was exactly it. And so with the strong help of undying friendship and adrenaline, L, J, and G pushed on and on. Day after day. And finally, when they were purely exhausted, they stumbled upon the room that would end their journey. They could feel the energy on the opposite side of the wall. L, J, and G gathered the remaining sense they had left and pulled out their wands. Muttering a chant only the three of them knew, the rock wall slowly dissolved, revealing a huge, glorious, beautiful chamber. It was gracefully lit with sunshine from very, very, very far above. From a hole in the towering ceiling, just barely visible, yet the light seemed to magically fill the whole chamber. Every nook and cranny of it. It's said the chamber room was so big that it generously fit a big rushing river, a field of beautiful plants, and a large captivating stone. It was magnificent, it's iridescence overpowering, breathtaking. It seemed to be nothing but a shiny gem wrapped in the brightest rainbow around. The three approached it slowly, feeling the first bit of warmth in months settle upon their skin. L, J, and G stood around the jewel with open mouths. Not believing that what they came for was actually existent. Savoring the moment, the explorers stood in awe just watching the gem sparkle. If you were G, you would be staring at the gem with the others. But it would remind you of your wife's eyes. Captivated by the sight, G reached up towards the jewel. Soon following, you would see L and J's hand raise up as well. And all at once, the friends touched the stone only to watch the stone crumble into glowing pieces, sending rays of light all over the cave walls. A spectacular light show was given to the wizards in thanks for finally finding the lost stone. The stone that yearned to be found. Desperate for a magical touch to begin a history that would live on forever. And that's what it got. L, J, and G collected the pieces, knowing exactly what must become of them just by touching the stone. Exactly 120 dime size colorful gems were scattered. Each explorer took their fair share of 40 jewels. But feeling as if they owed the cave something in return, they dug a fairly deep hole in the field of plants and buried one stone each. L went to the river and brought back a handful of water, in which he dropped on the patch of dirt. A few moments passed, and then the most elegant flower pushed it's way towards the light. It grew so fast and far that the trio had to take a handful of steps back in order to make room for the rapidly expanding stem. The stem finally ceased it's growth spurt and the explorers knew what they had to do. Charming their hands with a stick-spell, the wizards climbed up the stem towards the light, with renewed stamina and energy. Closer and closer they got. Then, finally, they stuck their heads into the light and gazed around at the scenery before them. A vast, empty plain with rolling grasses as far as the eye could see. And honestly, the friends were never happier to see such an adventure-less place in their whole lives. Jumping out of the hole, they bid their farewells to the cave and the alluring flower that now filled the hole in the earth. A sign to one and all to never give up, for the reward is pulchritudinous. A sign to trust the ones who love you, and sign to love the ones who trust you. And the message is one L, J, and G knew. And they knew to pass it on to their families. And in order to do that, they'd use the stones. As soon as they apparated home, L fit his stones securely into necklaces and named them 'The 39 Heirlooms'. J turned his into wristbands and called them 'The 39 Antiques'. And G made his into rings, referring to them as 'The 39 Legacies'. Passing the jewelry throughout the family, the messages of love and secrets of the gems were shown to the current owners.
Nobody knows if all 117 pieces of jewelry are still around today, but as long as some survive, the message remains alive. And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, if you keep your eye out, you'll receive one of the gems. If your lucky enough, it will reveal it's secret to you. Do you perhaps already have a gem? If you think you do, keep a close watch on it. It just might be one."
And with that, she finished the story with a wink and a clever twinkle in her eye. Our tiny mouths formed the perfect 'O'.
"Ohh Granny have you ever gotten a jewel?!" Asked Ray.
"Oh dear boy, that's for me to know and you to find out." She said sneakily.
"I bet you do have one. Don't cha Grandma Roccati!" I said.
"Oh look at the time!" She said laughing, "Time for bed small ones."
"Is that story true Grandma Roccati?" Asked Derek with uncertainty.
"Oh but of course it is, Derek!" Said Monica.
"She's right boy." Grandma Roccati said with a knowing smile.
And with that, the four of us children ran upstairs to our bedrooms at her house, full of story wonders and Christmas spirit.
She never told us that story again.
~
I watched as Draco took in the story. His expression changed from awe, to confusion, to curiosity, and landed on disbelief.
"So, you mean to say, this ring is one of the 39 Legacies?!" He said.
"Yes!! It all makes perfect sense!" I answered.
"That's- woah, that's crazy. So, what does it mean?"
"I guess that's for us to find out..." I replied.
He smiled. "I think you're right."
And I could see it in his eyes, this was going to be our adventure. Like G, way before we ever existed, it was now our mission to find the secret.
And I had no doubt at this point that we could do it.
