Chapter 1

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

So were was I yeah this is the about a book called Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, its also a movie so you may know it because of that here is a very inspiring part of the book(actually the whole book is amazing so you should read that).WAIT first I have to speed you up to date this boy named Jeremy and his best friend Lizzy get this box that Jeremy has to open on his 13th birthday from his dad(tragectically his dad is already dead)but the keys are mssing aand this box is special you need the correct keys and there is only 1 set,if you break open the box it and all its contents can be destroyed and Jeremy doesnt want that so they embark on this adventure to collect the keys and its his birthday and he only has 3 keys but Lizzy suprises hima nd gives him the last key so they open the box and inside there is a letter from his dad that says alot but Im going to fast-forward to the part I want to share with you: .................An old man is teaching his grandson about life. A fight is going on inside me, he said to the boy. A terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going inside you-and inside every other person, too.
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, Which wolf will win? The old man simply replied, The one you feed.

Even as a child, we have the power to create our own lives. We choose which wolf to feed, and this creates who we become, how we see the world, what we do with the brief amount of time allotted to us. From my 13th birthday forward, I basically grew up with a deadline of my head. I thought what of this woman is right? What if I only had 40 years, how many more times would I eat chocolate cake? (Turned out to be a LOT.) How many more times would I get to see a sunrise over a beach? Four or five? How many times will I listen to jazz? Ten times? A hundred? How many times will I hug my son good night?
I made sure to pay more attention to everything I was doing. To be fully in the moment. Because that’s all life is, really, a string of moments that you knot together and carry with you. Hopefully most of these moments are wonderful, but of course they all wont be. The trick is to recognize an important one when it happens. Even if you share the moment with someone else, it is still yours. It will protect you and guide you, because it IS you. What you hold here, in your hand, in this box, this is my string.
Until recently I thought it was death that gave meaning to life-that having an endpoint is what spurred us on to embrace life while we had it. But I was wrong. It isnt death that gives meaning to life. Life gives meaning to life. The answer to the meaning of life is hidden right inside question.
What matters is holding tight to that string, and not letting anyone tell us our goals arent big enough or our interest are silly. But the voices of others arent the only ones we have to worry about. We tend to be our own worst critics. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: Most of the shadows in this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine. I found that taped to the back of that mongo grandfather clock. (I wonder if your mother finally got rid of that thing like she always threatened!) Wisdom is found in the least expected places. Always keep your eyes open. Don’t block your own sunshine. Be filled with wonder............
