It was the night of the double date, and Lindsey and I were just arriving. Ringo and John weren't here yet, so we got a spot to sit at in the restaurant. It was nothing fancy, though it wasn't a drag, either.
Lindsey sat across the table from me, and immediately dove into the paranoia again.
"Is my hair ok? What about my dress? Mascara? Lipstick? Am I too nervous-looking? Oh god oh god oh god why did I decide to go???"
"Slow down, Linds! You came here because you like Ringo, and he likes you. You look fantastic," I said.
Lindsey smiled. "Thanks, Kelly. You were right about this red off-the-shoulder dress! And thanks for doing my hair in this french braid, too!" she paused and gave me a once-over. "You look so gorgeous tonight! I don't think John will be able to keep his hands off ya!"
I blushed, and looked down at my outfit. I didn't wear anything too special; just my micro mini black-and-white striped dress, with my cute black kitten heels. My naturally straight hair was set into big, flowy, blonde waves that cascaded down my back.
My makeup was way different than I was used to. Lindsey made a big thick line of black eyeliner that she made have a winged tip, as well as putting lots of coats of mascara on. The grand finale to my look was my lips- Lindsey had made my lips nude, and it looked absolutely fab, and although I wasn't about to admit to actually fancying him, I hoped John would take note of my new look.
After a couple of minutes of waiting for Ringo and John, Lindsey started freaking. Out. I'm talking full-on panic attack.
"OhgodKellywhatifthey'regonnastandusupIdon'tknowwhatI'lldoI'lldieifRingodoesthatohmygodohmygodOHMYGOD!!!!" she motormouthed.
"Ok, just take a deeeep breath and calm down. They aren't gonna stand us up, especially not Ringo. He really fancies you! I can tell! Look, they probably just got held up at a gig or something..." I reassured her.
Lindsey smiled, then suddenly snapped her head up to see something that was over my shoulder. "Or something..." she said.
I turned around, trying to see what caught her attention. There, coming through the entrance, was Ringo and John, walking towards us with a bouquet of roses each.
" 'Ello, love!" John said to me, handing me the roses.
I smiled widely. "Thanks, John."
He gave me a once-over and raised an eyebrow.
"Damn, Kelly, you look.../good/."
I blushed. "Ta."
We all got settled once again, John next to me; Ringo next to Lindsey.
Dinner was uneventful; I kept watching Linds and Ringo whispering to each other, Lindsey giggling uncontrollably, and Ringo pecking her softly and sweetly. "Aw," I thought to myself.
We kept small talk going on until Ringo said it was time for him to take Lindsey to the secret location, so we bid each other farewell and left; me with John; Ringo with Lindsey.
John and I got outside, and I realized we were finally alone.
We walked in silence for a couple of minutes, when finally John spoke up.
"Kelly... do you not like me, or what?" he asked.
"No, I like you..." I said.
"What I mean is..."
"I know what you mean, John," I said, "But do you like me?"
He paused. "Yes, I do. A lot."
We both stopped walking, and I looked up into his eyes, immediately seeing through his tough boy act, seeing instead a scared little boy afraid of rejection.
"So do I," I started, "But I'm worried you may not be willing to make a commitment with me."
John sighed. "Yeah... I used to be like that. Y'know, shag 'em and go, but... I don't know, it feels like something's changed in me, and that I'm ready to make a commitment... to you."
"I'd like to start dating you, and only you, Kelly," John said, smiling. "Y'know, go steady."
I smiled back. "I'd like to go steady with you, too."
He leaned in for a kiss, and I let him, kissing back, as well. Damn, he was a good kisser.
He eventually pulled away, an unsure look on his face.
"What is it?" I asked.
"I want to ask you something, but I don't want you taking it the wrong way..."
"Do you wanna maybe come to my house?"
"Sure! Sounds gear!"
John smiled widely. "Great! Let's go!" He said, leading the way to his home.
"Mimi!" John called as soon as we stepped inside.
"Your sister?" I asked.
"My Aunt, actually," he replied, looking embarrassed.
"Mimi!" he called again. No reply.
"Looks like she's not home. Good," he said.
"So... your Aunt lives with you?"
"More like I live with her..." John said sheepishly. "It's daft not having enough money to live on me own, but soon enough I will."
I nodded knowingly in reply.
As we walked up the stairs to his room, John asked, "Why do you always speed up around alleyways?"
I looked down at my feet. "It's complicated."
"Well, I'm sure I can keep up," John said, smiling warmly as he pulled me in his room and sat us down on the bed.
I took in a deep, shaky breath. "You see, when I was 14, my Mum, brother Jasper, and I went to Scotland. On our last night there, Jasper convinced me to go out with him. It was late at night and our Mum didn't know. After a while these guys came up to us and tried to flirt with me, but Jasper defended me, and the guys started hitting him, and Jasper told me to get Mum, so I ran to phone booth and called the police, but by time they got there all of them, including Jasper, were gone. They thought they killed him, and took the body someplace else. Me Mum blamed me for everything, and basically disowned me. The fight happened in front of an alleyway, so I try to avoid them."
John pulled me into a tight hug. "I understand how you feel. About yer Mum disowning you, at least."
I pulled away to look at him. "You do?"
He nodded, a sad look on his face. "She was sort of in and out of my life a lot, so my Aunt Mimi basically raised me. I was just getting to actually know my Mum when she was killed by a drunk driver, so I guess I also understand what it's like to lose someone close to you, as well."
There was a long silence, during which my head was on John's chest, his head on top of mine.
Suddenly he pulled away, looking at me oddly. "You don't believe Jasper is dead, do you?" he asked.
I stared back at him, bewildered. "H-how..."
"I could tell by the way you said the police believe he is dead."
I nodded slowly. "I would've known if he was dead."
My (rather dark) comment was followed by another silence, until we heard the front door swing open, making me jump.
"John! Are you here?" A female voice called.
"Up here, Mimi!" John called back.
I heard high heels clicking as John's Aunt Mimi walked up the stairs, and looked up to see a tall, thin, strict-looking woman standing in John's doorframe, staring at me.
"Who's this?" she asked rather sharply.
"Kelly, you know, the girl I said-"
"Oh, right, her," Mimi said, cutting him off. "Hello, I'm Mimi, John's Aunt," she said, holding her hand out.
I grabbed it and shook it. "I'm Kelly. It's a pleasure to meet you," I said, and smiled.
"Likewise," she replied, and forced a smile back. "She's quite an improvement on that hag before, Cyn-"
"Don't start, Mimi," John said, glaring at her.
With that, Mimi left and retreated to the room across the hall.
John sighed rather loudly. "I'm sorry, she's quite... intimidating, I know," he apologized.
"It's alright, I should be off anyway," I said, standing.
"Oh," said John.
I stared at him for a moment, noticing he wasn't ready to say goodbye yet.
"Do you... want to come back to my flat?"
John's eyes lit up. " 'Cor! Let's go!" he said, grabbing his jacket and pulling me out of his room.
