Chapter 3

The Broken CD

Michael left me in the empty auditorium saying that he would be back soon.
I sat back down in my selected chair. Of all the places in a hailstorm, I ended up being in the same place as the Jacksons! It seemed unreal to me.
I took my broken Jacksons CD out of my bag. I sighed.
I had saved for this and I couldn't get another one. My father would never allow it.
Ever since mom passed away, he has become.....well lets just say, he's mad at the world, but he takes it out all on me.
"Hey." I heard Michael's voice call behind me.
I flinched then turned around to face him.
"Whats that?" he asked smiling and pointing to the broken CD.
"Oh this?" I asked looking at it and trying to stuff it in my bag. "Nothing." I said quietly.
I didnt want Michael to see that one of his CD's was broken. It would be completely embarrasing.
"Oh come on. Please?" he asked.
I stared at him for a long moment. He was the first person to say please to me. To actually ask something, rather than demand. I found that nice. I pulled the broken CD out of the bag and showed it to Michael with a sheepish look on my face.
"This is what you didn't want to show me?" he asked.
I nodded.
"It is your CD. And it ''is'' broken." I said.
"Well, lucky for you, this isnt the only one." he laughed.
"I didn't break it. Someone" my voice got quieter with each word.
I didn't feel comfortable talking about my days with someone, particularly because no one ever listened or they didn't care.
Michael gazed at me. I looked up at him. The quiet was a little unnerving to me.
Say something. I thought.
Michael gazed at me for another moment.
"So what happened with this kid that broke it. Did he get in trouble or something?" he asked smiling.
He clearly did not care about the CD, he just wanted to know about me.
"If your talking authority" I replied. "I did."
"You got in trouble? What ever for?" he asked sitting down next to me.
"Well, he is always mean to me. And I was gonna play the CD but he took it out of my hands and broke I punched him."
"You punched him? You don't look like the violent type." he said.
"I'm not."
But with dad always hitting me, I guess I learned a thing or two about punching.
Michael laughed.
"MICHAEL!" I heard a rough voice sound.
I saw Michael go rigid. The laughter in his eyes replaced with fear.
"I-I gotta go." he said, getting up.
I looked over to where the voice sounded and I saw Michael's father standing there.
He had the same look I had every time my father called my name. I stared after Michael as he walked briskly towards his father. His dad gave looked at me before closing the door, leaving me alone in an empty auditorium.
I know your pain, Michael.
