A Very StarKid Romance

Chapter 1

A Wedding and A Meeting

by: magsisme
My cousin Carrie got married in March of 2011. When you are 24 and you have 28 cousins, watching all of them get married makes you feel kinda crappy about yourself when you're talking to aunts or any older family member. All they ever have to ask is "Maggie, are you dating anyone?" or "Whatever happened to that last boyfriend of yours?" or they get annoying and nag by saying "If you got yourself a boyfriend, this would be you." But there was something about this wedding that I was looking forward too. it was my first wedding after graduating college, so I could drive there alone. It was also because she was getting married in Chicago, and to me, Chicago meant only one thing. StarKids.

My name is Maggie Nelson. I'm 24 and I live in Boston. I am a recent graduate of Boston College. Because of my job as a writer, I have to transfer to Chicago that April to do some "real-life research" for my book. I figured that the wedding would be a good excuse to leave early. 5 days before the wedding, I was packing to live in Chicago. 4 days before the wedding, I was packing for the wedding. 3 days before the wedding, I was on a plane, on my way there.

I arrived in Chicago at 4:00 in the afternoon and headed to my hotel. After checking in and getting changed, I headed to my cousin's house to see everyone else in my family. I hadn't seen my parents and siblings in months. They all drove over together because my brother Brant, who is 22 was home for a weekend from Ohio State and my sister Valerie who is 19, was taking a year off form college. I also got to see al my other cousins who I hadn't seen in God knows how long. We had dinner and then we talked for hours, laughing and discussing recent events in our lives. It all went by too fast for me, and before I knew it I was back in my hotel room, planning my day of walking through Chicago looking for StarKids.

The next morning I got dressed (wearing my Find! shirt on purpose) and hit the streets of Chicago. Unfortunatley, I was unsuccessful in my mission, even though I did find a few StarKid Fans. I went over to Carrie and her fiance, Jared's house because I didn't feel like going bakc to my hotel. One look at my Find! shirt and they knew why I was sad.
"Maggie, Chicago is a big place, and StarKids are busy people." They assured me. "And who knows, maybe you'll find one where you least expect it. They smiled at each other and then I had to leae because they had to talk to the photographer. It was only 8:00, but I was feeling very tired, so i went straight back to my hotel and went to sleep, dreaming of Brian Holden.

Since none of my direct family was in the wedding, none of us had to go to the rehersal dinner, so we decided to spend the day together. I forgot how much I missed them. We all looked alike, with brown hair and brown eyes and heart shaped faces, but they were both taller than me, and I looked more like my dad than either of them. I had more red in my hair, and their eyes were very light brown, while mine were almost black.

Somehow, the night went by very fast. All my conversations had lately. They seemed to just float by. Something had been nagging at my brain that caused me not to listen, but I didn't know what it was.

Since my hotel room had a pull out couch, my mom let my sister stay with me for the night. Of course, we didn't really sleep. We laughed and watched movies and drew out of a Winnie the Pooh coloring book. Sometime around 2:30, she started asking me questions.
"Mags, you seem down lately. Like you're always thinking about something. What's been on your mind?"
"I don't know Val. It's just that something, I'm not sure what has been giving me a weird feeling lately."
"Is it about Cory?" She asked. Cory wa my boyfriend during my last year of college. He had verbally abused me for most of the relationship, and thankfully I ended it before it could turn into physical abuse. But words can hurt too. They leave scars. I changed the subject.
"We should probably get to bed. It's a big day tomorrow." She pulled out the pull out bed, said goodnight and then went to sleep, buy I stayed up and thought. I realized that the emotion that had been nagging me was lonliness. Not that I wanted Cory back. Not in a million years. I wanted someone that I could talk to and who would understand me. Someone I could vent to. On that thought, I fell to sleep.

When you have as many cousins as I do, every wedding is long and boring. They're all special, but they're all boring. I like the receptions. I like music and dancing. I may have majored in English, but I minored in Musical Theatre.

I was talking to my cousin Marley, when Carrie came up and started talking to me.
"Hey Maggie, there are a few people that I want you to meet." I got up and followed her all the way to the corner of the room. She led me to a table of four men who looked about my age, but I couldn't see their faces.
"Hey guys, this is my cousin Maggie. Maggie this is Nick Lang, Joey Richter, Joe Walker and Brian Holden." They all turned around and I could see that she was right.
"Carrie, why didn't you tell me you know the StarKids?"
"I wanted to surprise you. Surprise! Have fun!" She walked away leaving me alone with them.
"Hello." I said nervously.
"Hi." Said Walker.
I just stared for awhile.
"Guys," said Joey, "I think we broke Carrie's cousin."
Then my phone went off. Hermione can't draw, being played in front of the actual starkids. They all sang along and danced, and they seemed disapointed when I answered it, but I played it again for them.
"So Carrie says that you're staying in Chicago." Brian said.
"Yeah, but I can't find a place yet."

We then talked about unicorns and starkid and harry potter and nerf guns and stickers and superheros. I especially talked to Brian alot. Then a slow song came on.
"Do you want to dance?" He asked looking at me.
I blushed. "Sure."

We walked over to the dance floor. My hands around his neck and his hands around my waist. How many times had I dreamed of this moment?
"You know what I'm going to call you?" He asked.
"No what?"
"I'm going to call you half-ginger, because you have too much red in your hair to be a brunette, but too much brown in your hair to be a red head, so I hearby call you a half-ginger."
"Well then I get to give you a nickname!"
"That seems fair." He nodded.
"Okay, you're um, Ninja Turtle, because of all the things I heard you talk about its the Green Lantern and Ninja Turtles."
"Alright then." We continued dancing and talking and we exchanged numbers. Before I left I saw him wave at me and smile, which was all I needed. That night I didn't feel the feeling gnawing at my brain. Brian Holden cured me. I had to see him again.

I hope you liked Chapter 1. I know it was long with not much Brolden, but I promise more in the next chapter!
Damn the G.L.E.E!
<3 Maggie
