Chapter 2

Interrogated

"Wh---excuse me?" I asked. I suddenly felt drained, tired...and sad.

"You were in love with him," Dumbledore said, then he paused. "You do realize he's back."

I sucked in a breath. "I know," I whispered.

"There is a possibility that he might try to find you."

I shook my head. "No, that's not possible."

"There have been whispers of your travels, of your face being seen."

"Okay, well, if that's the case and he wants to find me, then what am I doing here? Shouldn't I go as deep into hiding as I've ever been?"

"Yes," Dumbledore said. "That is so very much an option, but not one of the reasons I have requested you here today... Clair, I need your help."

"My help?"

"You were once Voldemort's best friend. You knew a lot about him?"

"I guess so," I admitted slowly.

"I would be very much in your debt if you told me some things about him."

"He was evil."

Dumbledore chuckled. "Yes. It would seem so, but answer me this; why would you fall in love with him if he was so evil?"

"Well, I didn't exactly know at the time! I was thirteen when I realized I loved him. I met him down at the lake my first year. We just started talking and---" I stopped talking because I was so overwhelmed with memories.

I was suddenly there, all those years ago, sitting on a rock over looking the Black Lake. I was enjoying the view and missing home, even though I'd only been there a week when it suddenly felt like someone was watching me. I turned saw the most handsome boy I'd ever seen, handsomer than all those movie stars back in the muggle world. He had jet black hair, combed to the side in a cute way, and eyes that were so piercing that I'd thought that I might be able to see them from outer space. He was just so beautiful, I didn't know what to say as he came and sat next to me.

"I see I'm not the only one who enjoys the view from here."

It took me a minute to realize that he was talking me. His voice was so perfect.

"Um, yeah. Really pretty." Was I talking about the view or him? I couldn't tell. I couldn't even tear my eyes from his face.

He smiled. "Are you always this distant when having a conversation?"

"Um... no," I answered, shaking my head. "Not usually."

He smiled again. "I'm ... Tom Riddle." His smile faded.

"What? You don't like your name?"

"How would you guess that?"

I shrugged, forcing myself to look away. "The way you said it. It seemed like you were a bit reluctant to tell me."

"You're a good guesser."

I shrugged again. "I read between the lines."

There was a pause in the conversation. It wasn't awkward or expecting. We just sat there in companionable silence.

Then he said, "And usually when someone introduces themselves, the other person should as well. Did you infer that?"

I looked at him, the corner of his mouth was tugged up in a smile. He was teasing me.

Realizing that, I blushed. "I'm Clair Clearwater."

"Nice to make your aquaintence."

I giggled. "It's nice to meet you, too."

And from there things just went on. We became best friends. We knew each other's moods better than our own...

Or I thought we did. I always suspected that there was something darker than what should be sane. But I never really saw it.

I had never suspected that I fell in love with the most powerful dark wizard of all time.
