Chapter 1

Forbidden Fruit

Smiling kindly at the 2 little red fruits, Eve Moonlit gently bent down & carefully cradled them. She swiftly turned & walked back the way she had come. The trees created a dark tunnel shape, but the moon shone like a sun. Eve knew the woods well enough to walk blind, but she liked being under the light of the moon. Her thoughts flew to her husband, sick & waiting for her return. It is hard times & he works very hard for me, she thought, smiling. I bet when he sees what I have, he’ll cry with joy!
But, as everyone living in the woods knows, the full moon is a dangerous thing & the red fruits are the treasures of large bear. Eve knew this, but wanted them dearly & so, took them. Listening to the night sounds of the forest; Eve stopped & looked behind her to face a large black shape with burning red eyes. She screamed & ran; the bear in hot pursuit.
As she ran, she lost all sense of direction & began sobbing. Finally, after what seemed like forever, she ran onto a path leading to her home. The lights were still on, bright as day, beckoning her welcome. She ran to the door, unable to open it & the bear grabbed her cloaked. She screamed, tears falling in a waterfall like manner.
She cried; the bear cried; the fruits cried. The door slammed shut & she leaned against the door, panting & scared.

“Eve?” came a soft voice. “Is that you?”
“Yes” Eve gasped, shaking. She smiled as her husband came in from the hallway. “And I have a surprise for you!”
“Really?” He smiled & peered closely into her arms. His happiness instantly turned into sadness. “Eve, they are not our children! Take them back, please!”

She stood, shocked. She slowly looked down at the 2 little babies in her arms & screamed. Her scream was so full of sadness; it could break a soul in half. He took her shoulders gently & stroked a stray hair out of her beautiful face.

“It’s not too late to take them back” he said, smiling sadly.
“Yes it is!” she yelled, clutching the twins closer. “Because…”

His eyes widened & he opened the door to reveal the bear. Before their eyes, it shimmered & turned back into a woman with a basket. Inside the basket, lying on a flowery bed was a little bottle of milk. Eve sobbed softly to herself as her husband gently lifted the woman up & took her around the back. Eve stood in the cold, looking at her cloak as if it was poison. The babies whimpered & she held them closer to keep them warm.

“Put them to bed, Eve” her husband called. “I’ll wait for you!”

Giving in to his soft voice, she went inside. She put the babies into a warm, little basket & wrapped another cloak around herself. He stood a shove in hand, waiting for her. She put her cloak in & watched him fill it & neatly patted the earth into place. He leaned the shove against the tree & kneeled beside the grave. Eve did the same & they pressed their hands together above the grave.
This was their way of saying forgiveness, thanks & peace. When they’d finished, Eve took the basket & swiftly, but gently, went inside. He took the shove & smiled at the grave, then went inside. Eve had set up the little cradle he’d made for whenever they had children. He waited in the dining room & she came out.

“Adam” she said, taking his hand. “I’ve done wrong & I’m very sorry!”
“She’d understand” he replied, kissing her forehead. “You didn’t know!”
She smiled & hugged him. “I’ve come up with their names!”
“What would they be?” Adam smiled, looking deep into her eyes.
“Well, the boy’s name is Hansel” Eve said, grinning. “And her name is Gretel!”
