For A Girl Who Needed Help On An Algebra assignment

Here's how x=y
and how x=2
and y=2

Chapter 1

<><>

She says the problem is:

12-x^2 -2xy = 0
12-y^2 - 2xy = 0

BOTH ARE EqUAL to 0

12-x^2 - 2xy=12-y^2 - 2xy

ADD 2xy to each side, and subtract 12 -- then divide each side by -1 and you get:

x^2=y^2

notice how if we square root both of those x=y

so now go back and use one of those equations ---

12-x^2 -2xy = 0

Now plug in "x" for "y" -- and LOOK:

12-x^2-2x^2=0

12-3x^2=0

-3x^2=-12

x^2=4

x=2
y=2
