Chapter 1

Fun Ideas

These are superstitions retrieved from some websites and Mother Goose Rhymes. Try a few out if you can and enjoy V-Day! :D

It is said that the kind of bird a girl watches on Valentine's Day predicts her future husband. For instance:

Sparrow: a poor man

Owl: you may not marry

Woodpecker: you will remain a spinster

Any blue bird: a happy man

Blackbird: a priest or clergyman

Crossbill: an argumentative man

If a hen and rooster are seen together today, it indicates the girl will marry in the next year.

~ If you see a squirrel on Valentine's Day, you will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all your money.

~ If you see a goldfinch on Valentine's Day, you will marry a millionaire.

~ If you see a robin on Valentine's Day, you will marry a crime fighter!

~ If you see a flock of doves on Valentine's Day, you will have a happy, peaceful marriage.

~ If you find a glove on the road on Valentine's Day, your future beloved will have the other missing glove.

On Valentine's Day, the first guy's name you read in the paper or hear on the TV or radio will be the name of the man you will marry. (I believe this would work well on the vice versa--the first girl's name you read in the paper or hear on the TV/radio would be the name of the woman you will marry.)

If an apple is cut in half, the number of seeds found inside the fruit will indicate the number of children that individual will have.

These could be done any day of the year, but here are some Mother Goose Fortune-Telling Rhymes that fit the date. (:

Rock a Cradle Empty,
Babies will be Plenty.

Make a rhyme,
Make a rhyme,
See your beau
Before bedtime!

All Hail to the Moon! All hail to thee! I prithee good Moon, Declare to me, This night who my husband/wife may be! (To be said before bedtime. NOTE that this rhyme is supposedly 'best done' at the time of the New Moon.)

(Go outside to recite this one, and listen carefully!)
If I am to marry rich,
Let me hear a rooster crow
If I am to marry poor,
Let me hear a hammer blow.

If you find a hairpin,
Stick it in your shoe.
The next boy you talk with
Is sure to marry you!

A scratch up and down is a lover found.
A scratch straight across is a lover lost.

Lots more of these than I thought there were! Shall I keep going? Yes, yes I shall. XD

To meet your future spouse, count seven stars for seven nights in a row, and on the 8th day, the first person with whom you shake hands will be your future wife / husband.

If you count 9 stars for 9 nights in a row, place a mirror under your pillow on the tenth night to dream of your future spouse. (If you don't wish to, or can't find a small mirror to put under your pillow, apparently counting 13 stars for 13 nights is great all by itself, no mirror needed!)

Drop a stick in a glass of water and place it under your bed. You will meet your future spouse in a dream, crossing a bridge.

If you have some spare bay leaves, the following is for you! XD This was posted without any indicator of when you're supposed to do this, so I would suggest either the eve of Valentine's, or the night of 14 Feb itself.

Before you go to sleep put bay leaves on the corners of your pillow, and one in the middle. (I'm supposing underneath your pillowCASE, because otherwise this won't end well.) Lay down, close your eyes, and recite the following 7 times waiting 7 seconds between each repetition. :O

Dear Guardian Angel,
Let me have what I so earnestly do crave,
A Valentine imbued with love,
Who will both true and constant prove.

Your true love will appear to you in a dream.

That's all for me now! If you want to have a look-see round the internet for more superstitions you can do to make your Valentine's Day more fun. Also, if you have any others you'd like to share with us all, I'd love to see it! Please post a comment! (:
