Chapter 13

Chapter Thirteen

The next day I sat in the library, my eyes shut, just thinking everything over. I repeated things I was certain of.

There was a witch in the woods.

We were trapped on school grounds.

Harry wanted, no, needed me dead.

I opened my eyes and let out a shaky breath, holding back tears despite the fact that no one was there to see me.

This wasn’t fair, I’ve never done anyone any wrong. I didn’t want to be there. I didn’t want to be terrified for my life at any given moment. I didn’t want to be alone.

Gripping the arm rests, I breathed deeply trying to just calm myself. I just had to calm down, everything was going to be okay. At some point, everything would have to go back to normal, it just had to because I couldn’t do this. I could barely speak in front of a class let alone save lives and fight mythical creatures.

I squeezed my eyes shut, willing the library around me to melt away and be replaced with my room. My comforting, familiar room. However, regardless of what I wished, the library remained stationary.

I sighed and took one more steadying breath.

A knock sounded on the door. My eyes flew open, but the urgency wasn’t necessary. It was only Meredith.

“Mind if I join you?” She asked walking in towards me.

I motioned to the seat beside me, “Not at all.” She smiled and took her seat.

We remained silent for a few minutes, just enjoying the other’s company when a thought struck me.

“Why aren’t you afraid?”

Confusion riddled her face as she turned head to face me.

“You and the others, why are you scared or at least unsettled by everything that has been going on the past three days?” I elaborated.

She smiled fondly, “Why would I be afraid, this is all a dream after all. We all know it.”

That made sense. They all legitimately believed this was a dream, it was almost laughable! But I wouldn’t spoil their delusion.

“Oh, yeah you’re right. Sorry, that was a weird question.”

Admittedly, I thought they were joking when they voiced their thoughts on this being fake, but at least they were content this way.

Returning to our comfortable silence we sat like that for another half hour before I noticed something that should have annoyed me.

A tail just disappearing from the door frame. I stared intently at the frame and the tail appeared once more.

The wolf was back and I definitely had a bone to pick with him.

"Hey, Meredith, I think I'm going to go for a walk, my leg fell asleep." I stood up.

"Alright, I'll be here. Have fun."

I nodded and walked as quickly as I could without being suspicious out the door and swiftly turned right. Sure enough, he was sitting and waiting patiently. I stared at him for a moment before walking past him, knowing he would follow. And he did.

I turned into the nearest classroom to insure that no one would stumble upon us.

[I see you've been well, Annabelle.] He stared at me.

Give me answers. Now.

[If it's answers you want, all you have to do is ask.]

Okay, what's going on with Harry's mother? What has she got to do with any of this? And why does that witch need me dead?

[Come now, Annabelle, you don't really believe that she's torturing Harry's mother do you? No no, it's just a trick of the mind, very easy to play on humans.]

I knew it. She didn't have Harry's mum, but Harry certainly seemed to think so, and apparently was prepared to kill me for it.

What about the witch? Why does she want me dead?

[I thought the boy would have mentioned that already. You have something of her's, Annabelle. Something that simply cannot be replaced.]

And what do I have, may I ask?

[Magic, a store of magic.]

I grew wide eyed at him. You can't possibly believe that I'm magical in any way shape or form.

[Not you, something that is currently in your possession. Something that holds her supply of magic. I wish I could help more but I don't know what the object is more than you do.]

But if that's what this is all about, then all I have to do is give it back to her and everything will go back to normal, right?

The wolf whimpered almost inaudibly. [I'm sorry, but at this point just returning it won't be enough. She wants a trophy of her conquer, her conquer of a thief such as yourself, and I'm afraid that nothing less than your death will suffice.]

My heart sank, I had to die? That was it? That didn't seem very fair at all, but I suppose I've learned so far that nothing is fair.

But there has to be a way I can beat her right? Anything?

[Of course there is!]

Great! What is it?

[Oh I can't tell you, I don't even know myself. But I'm certain that there is another way of doing it, and I'm sure you'll find it. Just remember what I told you when we first met, you know you can't do this alone.]

Right, trust Harry, believe in him and all that jazz, but in case you have failed to notice, he wants me dead on a false account of his mother being tortured so I won't be trusting him anytime soon. How am I supposed to find a way to beat a witch, which I didn't even know existed three days ago?

[My dear, dear Annabelle, think of where you just were moments ago!]

A library? How is a library supposed to help me?

[Books! books, the world's greatest weapon. I suggest you use them well.]

"Annabelle? Hey Annabelle?" Louis called from the hallway.

My head snapped to the door.

[Remember what was said here.]

I turned to counter, but the wolf was gone. Just like that, in the blink of an eye.

"Annabelle?" Louis' voice sounded once more.

I turned to the door and opened it, "Yeah over here."

He was just a few feet to my left.

He spun to face me, "There you are! Come on, you're missing all the fun!"

"Do it again!" Julia clapped sitting down.

Harry smiled and obliged.

Julia was referring to Harry's acrobatic stunts, he had so kindly taken it upon himself to teach Brian to keep his balance while on his hands by keeping his core tight, and they started a game of reverse chicken you could say. While on their hands, the other tried to knock over the remaining.

For the first time, Harry was smiling. The others couldn't be happier that they were all getting along, but I knew what he was trying to do. If the others began to like him, then they would think it mad that I didn't.

Louis, of course, wouldn't become best friends with Harry that easily, he was my best friend after all and knew full well my thoughts about Harry, well despite the serious threat of homicide.

I glared at Harry from Louis' side, there was no way Harry was getting me to trust him that easily.

I may be a teenaged girl and he may be extremely good looking, but I'm not an idiot.
