Chapter 4

Something New Might Work

Look at me! I’m the king of New Yooooork! Suddenly! I’m respectable, staring right at ‘cha, lousy with stature! I was in my own little world as I walked home from my late night rehearsal in the studio. I didn’t really see anyone around, so the campus was my dance space. This was my favorite time of night. I didn’t have to worry about running into anyone and could just get lost in my music.

As I approached my dorm, I was so enthralled in the song I was dancing to that I didn’t notice the sock hanging on my doorknob. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem because I would just get my laptop before she noticed and relocate to the lobby. However, this wasn’t just like any other time.
I was about halfway through getting my stuff together when I heard Melanie, my roommate, sigh and say something I wish I hadn’t heard. “Ben, I love you.” I stopped dead in my tracks. No. It has to be a coincidence that she just said my boyfriend’s name. There must be hundreds of Bens on campus and she just happened to meet another one. I almost convinced myself of that too, until I heard his voice respond. “Love you too, babe.” I felt every muscle in my body begin to ache as the realization set in. My boyfriend is cheating on me with my roommate, in our room.

I couldn’t think of anything else to do so I quietly filled a bag with a change of clothes and my books for classes tomorrow, waiting until I heard a soft snoring coming from her bed. I grabbed a sharpie and wrote “I KNOW” clear across her forehead and “WE’RE DONE” across his. Normally I would at least be a little sympathetic towards the other person, assuming they didn’t know, but I know I can’t say that this time. I could feel the tears swelling up inside me, so with that I got out of there as fast as I could, not caring if I woke them up now.

I ended up heading back to the studio and spending the night there. It provided me with a familiar space so I could just let the emotions take over. I can’t remember how long I sat there crying, but the next thing I remember is my alarm going off signaling that it was time to wake up. Thankfully, the studio has a shower so I was able to look decent despite the night I had. Looking at the time, I realized that I would have to run to class in order to be on time.

As it turns out, our professor had something come up so she had to skip the lecture, but didn’t want to cancel class. So instead we were being shown some video that was supposed to show us the importance of getting our ideas out into the world. She told us that we would discuss what we got out of it when we meet next before rushing out of the room. I just scribbled the name on the top of my notebook so I could watch it later and let my mind wander.

I almost zoned out completely, but then something hit the side of my head. I looked to see that there was a folded up piece of paper now residing on my notebook. I opened it to find a note, letting a smile take over my face as I read it.

“To the cute little miss wearing the Batman shirt, I couldn’t help but notice the look of utter despair on your face. You know, you better crack a smile soon or your face might freeze like that. That’s what my mother tells me anyway. Seriously though, is there something wrong? If you would like to talk about it, I’m here.”

I looked in the direction the note came from to see who sent this to me. It didn’t take long to locate them. I knew it was him the second my eyes landed on the handsome boy with dirty blonde hair wearing a shirt almost identical to mine. It was probably because he kept glancing over to me every couple of seconds. Once he saw that I was looking at him, he gave me a quick smile and a little wave before returning his attention to the screen. I’m not quite sure what compelled me to want to open up to this complete stranger, but I felt like I could trust him.

After the film was over, I walked over to him as he was putting his books into his bag. “You know, it’s not exactly polite to hit people in the head with things.” I said with a hint of sarcasm in my voice. He looked up at the sound of me voice and smiled before replying. “Yeah well people need to be brought back to Earth sometimes.” He stuck his hand out then and introduced himself. “I’m Matt.” I hesitantly shook his hand before telling him my own name. “Amy”

“Well Amy, what do you say we go grab some lunch and you can tell me what’s got you so down?” He scratched at the back of his neck, as though he was nervous. It didn’t even take thirty seconds for me to decide what to say, so with a small smile I gave him his answer. “Well Matt, I think I would like that, even though you are a total stranger.” I couldn’t help but laugh at the look that overtook his face when he comprehended what I said. “Great! Let’s go!” He put his hand on the small of my back as he begin to guide me to wherever it was he wanted to eat.
