Chapter 2

The Reaping (London's POV)

"Mom? Dad?" I whispered, reaching my hand out to touch them.

"You betrayed us, London." Dad's voice boomed.

"You sold us to the Capitol, putting our whole operation at risk." Mom's eyes glinted with hatred.

"No, please! I didn't know what I was doing!" I yelled, tears streaming down my face.

"You deserve to go to the Games." Dad sneered. "You deserve what you'll get."

Mom nodded. "Do us one favor. Try not to get any more Rebels killed, okay? And give Snow hell."

"But Mom, Dad, it- I didn't know what I was doing!" I cried, falling to my knees.

"It's still your fault." Dad said harshly, pointing his hand at me.

"Your fault that we are dead." Mom added, crossing her arms over her chest.

"It's all YOUR FAULT!" They screamed.

I put my hands over my ears, screaming as well, choking on my tears. "Please...please, I didn't meant to!"

"Quit your screaming and GET UP, London!" I flew up in bed, hearing my Aunt screaming at me. "You need to hurry or you'll be late for the reaping!"

I put my shaking hands to my face, which was wet with tears.

Nobody knows how my parents actually died. I do. And their blood is on my hands.

I ran through the streets, Aunt's yelling still in my ears.

"You're not dressed appropriately! You'll get picked for sure!"

(her outfit:

She doesn't care about me going to the Games. She has two little baby boys. She just cares about losing her tessarae she makes me sign up for every year.

I made it to the square just in time, letting the Peacekeepers take my blood and rushing over to the 16 year old girls' section, keeping my head down.

I tuned Effie out as she went over the message the Capitol always sends us. Then she said, "And now for the female tribute."

Effie Trinket stood on the stage, her hands flitting around in the tribute bowl, scooping out a name. She teetered back over to the microphone in her high heels.

"London Samuelson."

My breath caught in my throat. You deserve what you'll get.

I kept my face impassive as I walked up to the stage, escorted by Peacekeepers. I stand next to Effie, my arms folded over my chest, surveying the square, waiting for Effie to pick the boys' name.

"William Cole."

On the outside, my face was like stone. But on the inside, my heart was pounding.

William Cole's mother had been a Rebel and was with my parents when the Peacekeepers found them. She was killed as well. Will had found out who it was that sold them out, I have no clue how. But he has every right to hate my guts and to want to kill me.

What I'd do to turn back the clock. I thought as Will climbed the stage.

"Shake hands you two." Effie said, smiling at us.

I turned and shook Will's hand once, looking him directly in the eyes. I saw hatred and sadness there, making me feel worse.

"Didn't I tell you that you'd get picked?" Auntie snapped as she and Uncle came into the Justice Building with their 1-year-old sons.

I grinned. "So sorry to disappoint you, Auntie."

Auntie Charlotte was my dad's sister. When my parents died, she got plopped with me. She doesn't know that it's my fault he died, or else she'd hate me even more.

"If you would listen to someone for once, maybe we wouldn't be in this situation." Uncled Tom said disgustedly.

"What? The situation of you two losing tessarae?" I laughed humorlessly. "So sorry to put you in this damn "situation". Meanwhile, I'm going somewhere where I'll probably DIE!" I was yelling now.

"Don't use that tone with me, young lady." Uncle said, crossing his arms over his chest.

I ran over to him and punched him in the face so hard that he fell backwards into a chair. "SHIIT!" Uncle roared, clutching his eye.

Peacekeepers flooded into the room as my Aunt yelled, "Take her away! She just hit my husband!"

I turned to the Peacekeepers, feeling rage flood through my veins. They tried to grab me, but I punched two in the face and another one in the gut before one punched me in the face and in the gut repeatedly until I was coughing up a little bit of blood. Then they could finally hold me down with my face smashed into the floor.

"Go ahead! Beat me! But your buddy pal Snow won't be too happy if I come to the Games in pieces, now will he?" I yelled as they pulled me to my feet and escorted me out of the room, me fighting every step of the way.

I was led down a hallway. Out of another doorway came Will's dad and what I assume was his younger brother. They both looked devastated. Will's dad saw me and his look of sadness turned to one of pure hatred.

"I'm sorry! I was too young to know what I was doing!" I screamed as the Peacekeepers pulled me down another hallway. "I'm SORRY!"

The Peacekeepers put handcuffs on me and made me sit in the car next to Effie as we waited for Will.

"You''re going to love the Capitol!" Effie said too brightly.

I rolled my eyes. "I'm sure I will, Effie."

Will came to the car then and sat on Effie's other side, noting that I was in handcuffs.

"Driver, go ahead." Effie said then. The car started moving. "Now, the first thing you'll want to do is to wash up...."

I tuned her out, leaning my head against the window, watching the people as we passed them.

One thing's for sure.

I'm going to bring Snow hell. For my parents. For Will's mom. And for me.
