Chapter 3

I sat in the living room quietly, stroking Maya, who kept growling quietly at the girl moving around. She was staring at my cat with an intensity that sort of frightened me-it was much like the way Maya would stare at a bird when I forgot to give her fresh food. I pulled her closer to me protectively.

Maya then did something unexpected-she hissed and clawed me, her back arched and her fur raised as though she was being threatened. I dropped her with a curse, shocked-she never scratched me! She then ran off yowling loudly.

"Maya!" I cried, leaping up and chasing her. I could hear the girl behind me, shouting "Catch that cat!" as I tried to follow Maya's yowling through the house. I ran down into what I was assumed was the cellar, and Maya was sitting on the ground, surrounded by what looked to be broken test tubes, a bright pink liquid soaked into her velvety black fur.

I snatched her up, checking her for cuts frantically. Then I glared at the girl, who was staring in horror at my cat. I opened my mouth, but was cut off by her yelling.

"NO! Not the elixir, I need a cat not a person!" she cried. She ran over to the test tubes, dipping her finger in the pink liquid and sniffing it. She groaned. "Just as I feared, it's the shifting elixir."

She looked at me with a glare. "You and your cat are no longer of use to me. Out, out, ''out!''" She screeched, pushing me up the stairs and towards the door. I was bewildered-shifting elixir? What did she need my cat for? What was going on? But before I could voice my confusion she shoved me out, slamming the door in my face.
