Chapter 1

by: Apathy_
Hanna glared at her brother from behind a curtain of curly dyed-blue hair. He laughed loudly at a joke his best friend had just told, ignoring Hanna; as usual. She never got any attention in this family.
"I said," she said loudly, "that Mum wants you! She wants to discuss your career with you further." She sneered the word career, scoffing upon it. It wasn't that she didn't think singing counted as a career. It was more that she was jealous of his new-found fame and fortune.
Jack sighed and turned to face her. His face was a twisted mask of annoyance.
"Look, Hayley, I'm busy talking to someone right now. I'd appreciate it if you didn't interupt."
Hanna's scowl deepened. "It's Hanna," she hissed, then turned on her heel and left the room. Typical. These musicians were all the same. And it wasn't even as if he was a real musician. He sang in a rock band, for God's sake. That wasn't real music. Hanna knew exactly what real music was supposed to sound like, and Jack's music wasn't it.
"HEATHER!" her mother yelled impatiently. "WHERE'S JACK?!"
"IT'S HANNA," she screeched back, her scowl deepening.
"DON'T YOU TAKE THAT TONE WITH ME, YOUNG LADY!"
"OH, WHATEVER, YOU OLD HAG!"
Hanna stomped upstairs to her bedroom and slammed the door as hard as she could. The fragile glass window in it cracked. Somewhere down the stairs, her mother was screaming various insults directed at Hanna. Ignoring her, she flisked the ON switch of her CD player and turned it up full volume. Any sounds that had previously been emanating from downstairs were quickly drowned out by the haunting tones of Enya and Lisa Hannigan.
