Chapter 1

Making Of the Puzzle

I'm curled up on the couch, the t.v is on in front of me, but I'm not really watching it. I take a chip from the plate on my lap and nibble it, it tastes dry. I look down at the plate, defrosted vegetables, defrosted chips, defrosted lasagna, and all from cheap supermarket packets. I sigh and place the tray of food on the coffee table in front of me. I stand up and stretch out my arms, I pick up the t.v remote lying on the cushion next to where I was sitting and I switch off the t.v. I felt lonely and bored, I decided to head to my room, maybe read a book. I start to walk though the lounge room, and down the hall. As I walk to my room, my feet sliding along the carpet, I see the spare room out of the corner of my eye. I turn around and walk up to the door of the spare room. I place my hand on the cool, sliver handle on the door and turn it, the door opens easily and I step in the room has a single spare bed and a bedside table, it's only small and has a built in cupboard to the right of the bed. I know that when we moved here mum put some spare things in the cupboard, I thought it might be interesting to look around at what's there. I open up the two doors of the cupboard wide and look around. There a small boxes on the bottom of the cupboard, but I reach up and grab a big box from the top, I put it on the ground and sit cross legged with the box in front of me. I lift up the lid of the box and look inside, its dusty and it full of newspaper. I push the newspaper aside and feel around, there's another box in there and I pull it out, I use my hand to swipe the dust off, it's a jigsaw puzzle with 500 pieces, it looks interesting. I take it back to the lounge room setting it down on the coffee table. I tip all the pieces out onto the table and start to build the puzzle.

My eyes grow heavy as I slide the last piece of the puzzle into place, I kneel on the dirty carpet the coffee table in the middle of the lounge room is in front of me, I shiver and pull my scarf around my neck a little tighter, I stretch out my arms and I rub my eyes then look down at the finished puzzle. It's a picture of a beautiful two- story, cottage the front of it covered in ivy surrounded by tall oak trees, leaves golden by autumn. Just below the house runs a smooth flowing river, the same colour as the clear blue sky above. I hear sirens coming from the busy city outside and I sigh what I would do you live in a house like that. The digital click on the bench to my left beeped, I looked up at it, the blue neon light glowed 10:00. I give another small sigh and I head to bed leaving the jigsaw puzzle on the table.
