Chapter 1

Safe and Sound

I open my eyes to the sound of crying. I panic a little, worried someone might be hurting her. I sat up in my bed and looked all around, where is she!! I hear another set of sobs and follow the sound of them. I stop when I reach the corner of our small room.
"Are you okay Sarah?" I ask my little sister.
"I-i-i had a nightmare." Sarah stuttered.
"Do you want to tell me what it was about?" I ask.
I sit down and criss-cross my legs, then I hold out my arms. Sarah gladly climbs into my lap and cries some more.
When she stops crying she starts to whisper, "My nightmare was about you, Isabel. They came and they took you away from me and you never came back, never. You let go of me and never came back." Sarah says.
"That is a terrible nightmare, but I'll never let you go." I say.
This war, the shadows the soldiers cast they scare Sarah to death. In fact my ten year old sister is nearly as gloomy as someone about to die, but I do all I can to keep her light of happiness shining. It's hard, especially when I know more about what's going on out there then she does, but still I try my best. I pick her up and lay her back on her bed.
I am about to turn away and go to my bed when I her Sarah say, "Don't leave me here alone."
"I am only going to my bed." I say pointing to my bed that is only a couple of feet away.
"Don't leave me alone." she says.
"Okay." I say
"Can you sing me a lullaby?" She asks, quietly.
"Sure, Sarah.
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound" I sing to her, we both drift off to sleep
I wake up to a bomb crashing a little ways away from our house. I carefully get up and check out the window to see a big fire at the house that used to be a couple miles down the rode.
"Isabel?" Sarah asks.
I look over to see she is getting out of bed and coming over to me.
"What's going on?" she asks.
I grab her hand and lead her away from the window.
"Don't look out of the window okay Sarah." I say remembering the fire raging on out there, it would just give her more nightmares.
"Why?" she asks
"Because there is a war going on, which means you need to stay away from the window as much as possible." I say with a hint of worry.
"Okay." Sarah says, obviously scared.
"Do you remember the lullaby I sang to you last night?" I ask.
Sarah shakes her head no in reply.
"Would you like me to remind you?" I ask with a smile.
Sarah nods her head yes.
So I start to sing, "Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound"
"Now you remember that lullaby even when I'm done singing it okay?" I ask Sarah.
Sarah nods her head and hugs me. A tear falls down my face out of fear and worry of when our last day may be.
"Would you like me to sing it to you Isabel?" Sarah asks.
"Sure." I say.
"Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light,
You and I'll be safe and sound" she sings.
I smile and we continue our day, hoping that this war will soon be over.

So this is for a contest, but I started writing this and started to get an idea that I might continue on this story(once the contest is over) not sure yet this is still just a brewing idea
