The Sorting Hat
"Hey Chris!" I call. He turns and smiles at me, then continues with his friends.
Then, we both heard a booming voice, "All first years o'er here!"
We follow the voice to a very big man. "Everyone here?" He asks. "Now all of ye, get into a boat!"
I get into a boat with Hermione, Harry, and Ron. "Forward!" The man shouts, and the boats start rowing by themselves! We round a huge rock, then there, sitting on the edge of a cliff, Hogwarts Castle. It was lit up like a Christmas tree.
"Wow..." I say, gaping.
We reach the other side of the lake, and we walk up to the giant castle doors. The man knocked his big hands on the door. The doors swung open and a strict looking women with her grey hair tied tightly in a bun stood there waiting.
"Welcome, first years to Hogwarts: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. My name is Professor McGonagall. Please follow me."
We walked down a passage of hallways and Professor McGonagall shows us to a room. "You will all wait here until the Great Hall is ready for you." She says and closes the door. The room was dimly lit with torches surrounding it.
Harry, Ron, Hermione and I sit and wait. Nothing happens until a girl with blond pigtails screams. We all look up and see ghosts coming through the walls.
"Well hello first years, I hope you get into Hufflepuff, my old house!" A wide ghosts says cheerfully.
The ghosts all float around and talk, until Professor McGonagall comes back.
"Ghosts! Peeves! Shoo!" She commands and they all disappear through the walls.
"The Great Hall is ready for your arrival. Now let's go."
Professor McGonagall led us up to the front of the room. She stepped forward holding a long roll of parchment. "When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," she said. "Abbott, Hannah!"
The girl with blond pigtails and rosy pink cheekbones tripped out of the crowd of first years. She sat on the stool and the hat was placed on her head. "HUFFLEPUFF!"
The black and yellow table stood up and cheered, clapping for her as she sat down. I hope my house would do that for me.
"Bones, Susan!" Hufflepuff.
"Boot, Terry!" Ravenclaw. I saw my brother cheering and clapping, and I smiled.
"Bulstrode, Millicent!" Slytherin. The other tables groaned as the Slytherin table cheered. But I had to disagree. Who names their kid Millicent?
"Cadberry, Larissa!" Ravenclaw.
This was my chance. I walked up gracefully to the hat, my blond curls bouncing. I sat down on the stool and the hat was placed on my head.
"Hmm..." the hat started. "Very intelligent, I see. Your brother is in Ravenclaw and your father was in Ravenclaw... Do you have preference?"
"No, not really." I say quietly. I look around to see everyone in the hall looking at me. Chris, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and everyone else.
"Creative... Determined... Brave... I see ambition too, no? Stubborn as well..." Oh no.
"I think... SLYTHERIN!" It announces.
What?! Oh no. No no no no no. Slytherin? Me?! My smile turned into a frown. Harry, Ron, and Hermione looked shocked as I walked over to the Slytherin table, and I passed Chris, who just looked at me with sympathy.
I sat at the very far end of the Slytherin table, wanting to cry, but I couldn't.
There was a very small chance of Harry, Ron, or Hermione would get into Slytherin. I put my face in my hands and had to hold tears back. My father is going to kill me.
"Granger, Hermione!" She ran up to the hat and it shouted, "GRYFFINDOR!"
My best friend was in my enemy house. Just lovely.
A couple more names were called and then she said, "Malfoy, Draco!"
A boy with slick blond hair and grey eyes walked up to the hat and sat down. The hat barely touched his head when it screamed, "SLYTHERIN!"
He smirked and swaggered over to the Slytherin table and sits down with two chubby boys and gave a glance at me.
"Kohr, Lisa!" A nervous girl with very long black hair and blue eyes, walked up to the stool and sat down.
A few minutes later, it shouted "SLYTHERIN!"
The girl looked like she was about to burst into tears as she walked over to my table. She sat down next to me.
"Are you ashamed to be a Slytherin too?" She whispers.
That was kind of an awkward question, but I slowly nod.
We watch the rest of the sorting, Harry almost got into Slytherin, which I wish he did, but he didn't want to be in Slytherin so he got put into Gryffindor.
Maybe Ron will get into Slytherin...
Nope. I am separated from all my friends and my brother. That hurts.
Then the sorting ended and the Headmaster stood up to speak. I paid attention carefully.
"Now, no first year is allowed in the third floor corridor unless you want to face a horrible death. Now, Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"
Everyone clapped and cheered including Lisa and I, but the Slytherins looked at us with scowls.
Suddenly the tables filled with delicious foods and drinks. I took some food but barely touched it, but I did talk to Lisa.
It turns out she has a brother that's a third year Slytherin, and basically she had to be Slytherin or her father and brother would beat her. She said she basically asked the hat to put her in Slytherin, even though the hat thought she was Hufflepuff material.
I told her that my brother is in Ravenclaw, and so was my father when he was in Hogwarts. I also said that my father would not beat me, but probably send me a Howler.
In the middle of dinner, a boy who looked a lot like Lisa came over to her. "Great job Lisa! Dad would be proud!"
Lisa merely nodded and the boy stared at me.
"You should never be in Slytherin. You should be ashamed of yourself you filthy half blood." He spat.
The boy got up and walked away. "Don't mind him. That's my brother, Tyler."
Finally, dinner was over and I followed the Prefects, Roderick Caster and Charisma Hassel to the entrance to the dorms.
"The password is Pureblood." Said Charisma to the rest of the Slytherin first years. "If you forget it, you aren't getting in."
Roderick then lead the first years into what they called a common room. "Boys dorms to the left and girls dorms to the right."
The girls and the boys separated up the stairs. There were two rooms for the first years, all the gossip girls went into one and Lisa and I went into the other.
It was a pretty big room with stone walls and dark wood flooring with a large green rug with a snake on it in the center of the room. It also had fireplace and three bunk beds, three large windows, desks, and a full bath, as well as large cabinets to keep our stuff in. Our new Slytherin robes, ties, and scarves hung on our desk chairs next to our beds.
I claimed the bottom of the right bed and unpacked, then changed into my pajamas. Lisa did the same and I climbed into bed.
I pulled the green and black sheets over me and put my head on the pillow.
I just stared out the window until I fell asleep around midnight.
