In This Together

This story is a romance which follows two protagonists named Emma and Grace. All of the odd chapters will follow Grace and all of the even ones will follow Emma. Time has gone by in between most of the chapters, so just keep that in mind. Also, it's just something that I kind of wrote for my own enjoyment, so it is a more plot driven story with less description and a good amount of dialogue.

Chapter 1

Emma continued to punch the wall until she noticed blood trickling out of her knuckles. She was upset; she was hurt, but more than anything else, she was angry. It was a combination of anger at the world and anger toward herself.

“It’s all my fault!” she screamed before throwing another punch.

Breathing heavily, she took a good, hard look at her bleeding fist. Tears began flowing out of her eyes uncontrollably, before she collapsed to the carpeted floor below her. She was all alone, and only had herself to blame for it, whether it was her fault or not.

Just mere months ago, Emma began the school year. That was when she met the girl who changed everything.

Emma fidgeted anxiously at her desk. It was hard for her to stop her leg from shaking. She had never had this problem before, however it continued to persist.

The girl next to her turned her head to face Emma.

“Could I borrow a pencil?” she whispered quietly with a shy smile.

Emma nodded. “Yeah,” she said before grabbing a pencil from her bag and handing it to the new girl.

The girl extended her arm slightly, reaching for the pencil. Her finger touched Emma’s lightly. Both of the girls looked up for a brief second slid the pencil out of Emma’s hand.

“Thanks,” she said in her soft voice. She looked down to face her desk and her curly blond hair followed her head’s downward motion.

Emma only nodded. She usually didn’t find herself at such a loss for words, but she just didn’t know what to say. Luckily, she didn’t have to worry much about making conversation with the stranger, for class began soon after this awkward encounter.

Class went on as usual. Not much was different, aside from the fact that she couldn’t help but steal a few glances at the shy, curly haired girl next to her.

After class, the new girl turned toward her.

“Thanks…for the pencil,” she said, handing it back.

“No problem,” Emma replied. She was actually surprised about the fact that she was able to speak those two simple words.

Just as the girl was getting up, Emma asked her for her name.

“Grace,” she said slowly. Her response seemed to be almost reluctant, and she placed her right hand on the golden chain with the Christian cross that hung from her neck as soon as her name was spoken.

“I’m Emma,” Emma replied. This kind of introduction was new to her. She’d lived in the same place for her entire life. Her friends were there, and she had found them easily, just as everyone does when they’re young. Since she had these friends, everyone else was just there. Yes, sometimes she made small talk, and she has most definitely heard many rumors in her day, but otherwise she’s never had the need to acknowledge anyone else.

“Nice to meet you. Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you could help me find my next class. I don’t know where I’m supposed to go,” Grace said, indicating a specific point on her school schedule.

“Yeah, sure, of course.” Emma just happened to be in that very same English class. Together, they walked toward the hallway.
