Chapter 2

Time To Heal

Lydia woke up that morning in a cold sweat. She'd had yet another nightmare about that terrible night two years ago. She remembered the nauseating smell of her parents' blood. The excruciating pain from when Rob attacked her. The heart-crippling sound of the bullet being shot into Brad's body. Lydia shook her head hard, like she was trying to shake the memories out of her head. She then went to the bathroom to take a shower.

After her parents' murders, Lydia was sent to live with her grandparents, who lived just a few miles from Lydia's old house. After the incident, Rob seemingly disappeared from the city, so Lydia was able to return to school. But despite being reunited with her old friends, Lydia was very withdrawn and spent most of her time alone. It was like she was a whole different person.

After taking a hot shower, Lydia went downstairs to get some breakfast. "Good morning, dear." Lydia's grandmother, Carlene, said as Lydia walked into the kitchen. "Good morning." Lydia said, her voice lifeless. Slowly, she poured herself a glass of orange juice, made herself some toast, and went back upstairs.

As Lydia sat on her bed, watching TV, she got onto her laptop and logged into Facebook. Soon after she logged on, she got an IM from her best friend, Hanna Brooks:

Hanna: Hey, Lydia! How's it going?

Reluctantly, Lydia responded:

Lydia: As good as ever. I'm eating breakfast.
Hanna: Lydia, I know things have been tough for you, but you've just GOTTA get out of this funk? What happened to the fun girl I used to know?
Lydia: She grew up and realized that the world isn't all sunshine and lollipops.
Hanna: OK, Lydia. I gotta get going. Bye.

After that, Hanna logged out. Lydia put her laptop down and tried to think about who she was before the murders. Quickly, Lydia took her computer, opened up Word Document, and wrote her thoughts. "Before then, I was a happy girl. I had a youthful innocence that was abruptly taken from me. I had friends and was brave enough to love and risk getting hurt. I was fearless. I want to be that girl again."

"I need to get over this. I need to be Lydia again." Lydia thought as she saved the document. Then, she picked up the phone and called Hanna. "Hanna, my grandparents are leaving town tonight and won't be back until late. I'm gonna have a party tonight. Invite all of our old friends." Lydia explained to Hanna. "Why the sudden change, Lydia?" Hanna asked. "You're right. It is time for me to heal." Lydia replied.

"OK. See you tonight, Lydia. I'm glad your back." Hanna replied cheerfully before hanging up.
