Chapter 2

It's Me

by: ArtyBoy
Maria sat in her little cubbyhole, the only gap in the wall which was veritably filled with books. In her hands lay Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which she was rereading for the millionth time.
She stared out of the window, humming a little song, although she didn't know where she'd heard it. Not knowing why, she stood and walked over to the window, peering out into the fog. Suddenly, she heard an odd, creaky, metallic noise from behind her. She whirled around, and saw something she couldn't even process. There was a blue box. A police box. In her room. Crashing into her books. She stared in shock as her wall of books tumbled down, and winced as she heard pages ripping and spines cracking. A man stumbled out of the box, looked around in confusion, and frowned.
"Well," he said, "This certainly isn't Cardiff." His eyes landed on Maria, and her shock was replaced by rage.
"You.." she said, and her voice was low and deadly.
"I what?" the man inquired, although he now looked a little wary.
"You-" she screeched, "-ruined -my -BOOKS!"
Maria may have been short, but she moved with lightning speed as she strode over and slapped him. Hard.
The man clapped a hand to his face, brown eyes widening. However, unlike everyone else Maria had ever slapped (which was actually a lot of people), he didn't get angry.
"What's your name?" he asked calmly.
"Maria Maxwell Keir, but if you call me Maria I'll slap you again. It's just Max, okay?" she told him. She didn't know why she was being this nice, considering that he'd just destroyed the books she'd spent her whole life collecting.
"Okay, Max." he replied with a smile, "I'm the Doctor."
She didn't question the rest of his name. Some people just had weird names.
Suddenly, the door of his blue box caught her eye. It was open, and there was something inside. Moving closer and peering inside, she gasped.
"It's smaller on the outside!"
The Doctor looked thoughtful.
"That's not what people normally say. Normally it's 'Oh, it's bigger on the inside!'"
Max frowned. "Well, that's just silly. It's usually the outer appearances that aren't real, so why should it be the inside that's an odd size, rather than the outside?"
"Hmm, that's true." replied the Doctor, "You're very smart, aren't you?"
But Max wasn't listening, as she had pulled the door of the box open.
"Where are you going?" the Doctor asked, surprised. People didn't normally invite themselves into his TARDIS. Max looked back at him, and smiled.
"Why, on an adventure, of course."
She stepped inside.

Maria smiled, remembering the first time she'd met the Doctor. They'd been through a lot since then. The Doctor looked over, and raised an eyebrow.
"You're thinking of when you slapped me, aren't you?"
"Which time?" Max shot back with a smirk.
"You know, the- the first one. Again, sorry about the books." he replied.
"You'd better be, Doctor; I had signed copies of all the Harry Potter books." she informed him. He gasped.
"You did?!"
"Yep, and you ruined them." said Max with a malicious grin.
The Doctor looked horrified, but before he could say anything, the TARDIS shuddered and shook.
"Oh," the Doctor, "We're here."
"Where is 'here', exactly?" wondered Max.
"I have no idea."
"Well, then, Doctor.. shall we be off?" Max chirped, offering him her arm. He took it, and together they walked out the doors.
The place they had landed was an empty-looking suburban street. A glance at a newspaper lying on a bench told them that it was 2014, and they were in Canada. To the left, there was a small playground, empty except for a small girl with her blonde hair in pigtails, sitting alone on the swings. To their right.. was another TARDIS. Max gasped.
"Doctor, what the..?"
"I have no idea." he replied, looking baffled. As they stared, a man who was obviously the Ninth Doctor stepped out, a girl with black and red hair in tow. He caught sight of Max and the Tenth Doctor, but before he could say anything, there was a familiar noise from the left, and another TARDIS appeared. The man who Max assumed was the Eleventh Doctor followed a black-haired girl out the doors. Now all the Doctors and companions were staring at each other.
Max took a shaky breath. "Who..?"
All three Doctors spoke at once.
"Well, it's me, apparently."

(Author's Note: In case you couldn't tell, Max is the companion of the Tenth Doctor.)
